and her son have to stay in the borders while they were checking. “Borders” the short story specifies two borders; as the physical border between Canada and United States which people
cross from each other although the other one is the symbolic border between somebody’s identity and citizenship. The narrator of borders points out the form where the person from rather than who’s the person such as he shows the proudness of citizenship. To prove the above thesis this
border guards, yet she repeated herself by saying she’s Blackfoot. That time when border guards
asking, again and again, the same question, she got stubborn and tough. As the mother was proud of her native community, she says that she’s not an American or a Canadian.
After-all when the media was got to know about this situation the officers allowed them to cross the border. She doesn’t want to pick a country from Canada or America now black-foot is
recognized citizenship. We can see from these points that mother didn’t give up even in a hard situation like this she wanted to protect her culture and values and she taught everyone what is pride even.
As the first nation faced some problems to rebuild their identity. Thomas king describes perfectly how Laetitia was rejected because of her awareness. While she was refusing the language in Blackfoot the historical perspectives have been left. Some examples of this situation are how the mother was locked near the border because of her honesty and trustworthiness (king 1993) “this
is a story” through the words “coyote went fishing, one day. That’s how it all started” (p.142) it seems that both have worked to provide some perspectives for the history.
In conclusion, I believe that the short story “borders” was an interesting story and give a good message to today's society as well. Indigenous people should be given the same right as others deserve and they should be treated as same as other too. Thomas conveys that government shouldn’t allow passing the borders only for Canadians and Americans they should allow the Blackfoot community. The perfect example is mother and son were trying to cross the borders but the border guards did not allow them to cross as they should be either Canadian or American. Although Thomas King's message was straight full towards indigenous people and how he describes pride was powerful. All the scenarios allowed the reader to understand the story flawlessly.
