Lab Report Assistant
This document is not meant to be a substitute for a formal laboratory report. The Lab Report Assistant is simply a summary of the experiment’s questions, diagrams if needed, and data tables that should be addressed in a formal lab report. The intent is to facilitate students’ writing of lab reports by providing this information in an editable file which can be sent to an instructor.

A.Identify three environmental influences on microbial growth. How does each affect microbial distribution? Temperature, oxygen, availability, and pH influence where microbes are found in the environment. Temperature limits the distribution of many organisms, oxygen availability also affects microbial distribution, and pH either a very acidic or alkaline solution make it difficult for a microorganism to undergo respiration and to maintain a proton gradient that can be used to power transport of various compounds across the membrane and for energy generation.
B.What is a halotolerant microbe? How do halotolerant microbes differ from halophiles? A halotolerant microbe can survive at high alt concentration but do not require these conditions for growth, Halophiles require a high salt concentration for growth.
