  1. If there is a new evolving industry, they will require a whole new setup to make a network work. For this they would require routers, switches, hubs, modems and servers too. But as they are new they can most of the times not afford to buy the components right away, they first need to implement the same topologies and configuration as they need in the simulator. And if the simulation works as per requirements it will be a success and they can move forward with the same implemented topology, or else if they fail to model the required network in the simulator they will have to troubleshoot the network as per their requirement without spending anything.

  • GNS3 v/s Packet tracer:

Packet Tracer is the ultimate learning tool for in-depth knowledge of CISCO systems. But Packet Tracer is practically designed for CCNA prep and with the exception of not generating proper secured shell keys, is absolutely perfect for Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1. But GNS3 is far more accurate for routers as we have the real Internetwork Operating System which gives much more room to work with the advanced and real world matching scenarios. GNS3 is used in professional settings to test network configurations before implementation.

GNS3 is a graphical network simulator focused mostly on supporting Cisco and Juniper software. GNS3 has a large user base, made up mostly of people studying for Cisco exams, and there is a lot of information freely available on the web about using GNS3 to simulate Cisco equipment.

GNS3 can also be used to simulate a network composed exclusively of Virtual Box and/or Qemu virtual machines running open-source software. GNS3 provides a variety of prepared open-source virtual appliances, and users can create their own.

This solution can be chosen for the establishment of virtual labs, especially in the preparation of the first Cisco certifications such as CCNA, but require a machine with good resources to emulate multiple devices simultaneously. [vi]

Wireshark is a free and open-source packet analyzer. It is used for network troubleshooting, analysis, software and communications protocol development, and education.

Simulations worked on

After installing GNS3 & loading the image of router 2691 a topology is made where we have implemented the topology mentioned above. Thus we have set one router for the headquarters at Delhi, one router each at the regional office at Bangalore, Mumbai & Kolkata. Followed by the 2 routers (local office1 & local office2) which are connected to the regional offices. After loading the routers, we find the idle PC value at any one router by right clicking on any router and choosing the asterisk value which gives out the optimal usage of the PC which we are working on.

Figure2: Idle PC value set

The CPU usage drops down to 14% of the total after setting the idle PC value.

Figure 4: CPU performance due to dynamips

IP addressing is done.

Figure 6: Final topology

Loopback address is set at all routers. For example here at router 4 we have the loopback address is 4.4.4.4 & it is set because the software can be tested if broken.

Figure 8: EIGRP Protocol established

After implementing the routing protocol, Quality of Service (QOS) is setup on each router by making a class map and defining policy maps under it. These policy maps included setting IP precedence values and setting the bandwidth by priority command. Due to the use of priority command, there is strict scheduling priority for the class that is the IP packets get the maximum priority and the bandwidth cannot exceed the defined value neither by Kb/s or by percentage.

Precedence values for Backup and Delhi office is 5 ( Critical )

Precedence values for local office's is 1( Priority )

Head office- Delhi (5,00,000 Kb/s)

Backups (5,00,000 Kb/s)

Class maps used for Bangalore 1 office are Bangalore1input and Bangalore1

Policy maps for Bangalore 1 office are Bangalore1prebw & Bangalore1prebwi

Figure 13: Precedence value for local office

We see that 55 packets have come in at Head quarters (Delhi) with the QOS values (precedence = 2) set & bandwidth= 5,00,000 Kb/s.

  • It is a freeware & open source.

  • We can simulate complex networks.

  • A Cloud object that allows the interconnection of the simulated network with the outside world.

  • Simulated topology can be connected to real world.

  • A major advantage is that we can interface devices which are made by different vendors.

  • Disadvantages of GNS3:

  • We have to download the IOS images whenever needed.

  • IP accounting cannot be implemented in serial interfaces.
