2. Procedure
2.1. Hazards
• The hazards arising from Hot Work comprise the following:
• The ignition of flammable vapour within a confined space can produce pressure well above the safe working pressure of most types of tanks used for liquid storage. An explosion within a tank is therefore liable to cause violent failure of the vessel. Parts of the tank may be propelled as missiles, and a flame front of hot gasses and burning liquid may be expelled.

• NB! – All activities requiring entry into a confined space require a Permit and adherence to the “Confined Space Entry Procedure”.

• Prior to any Hot Work activity taking place, the supervisor or foreman shall do a “pre‐task assessment” and emphasise all the risks associated with hot work activities.

• If the hot work involves or produces substances hazardous to health, e.g. welding fumes, acids etc. additional control measures must be addressed.

• Any material in the work area likely to give off toxic or unpleasant fumes is to be identified, removed or protected.

• Floor and wall coverings located within 10m from the work site are to be covered to prevent hot sparks from entering wall or floor gaps. • Welding shields must be used where possible to prevent ultra‐violet light exposure to other employees.

• When transporting cylinders containing oxygen or acetylene, take precaution against bumping, falling and rolling of the cylinders. All cylinders must be in a cylinder trolley and must be chained.

• Acetylene cylinders may never be inclined in excess of 45°.

• Fire watch measures shall remain in place for a minimum period of 15 minutes after completion of hot work activities to ensure that no smouldering materials are left behind.

• All equipment shall be removed and properly stored.
