How race gender affects education and wages

  • The research plan will be up to you. For example, you must decide whether you want to focus on a specific geographic area, time period, cohort, etc. You must decide whether you want to use individual-level data or aggregate individual-level data to a geographic level (if you want to aggregate the data, you should use IPUMS). You must decide what other variables to include. You must include (somehow) the impact of education on wages, but you may also choose to focus your analysis on another variable - for example, how financial factors or family background affect educational attainment and wages…. how race or gender affects education and/or wages, the impact of public policies,… You may also want to pull in data from other sources.

  • Previous literature can help guide many research decisions (for example, on your choice of sample and how you plan to clean your data and measure education and wages …). You must include at least one outside source (most likely a journal article) – use either MLA or APA for your references.

  • All of your tables and figures should be easy to interpret without reading the text (while still providing a clear interpretation/analysis within the text).

  • You must also describe your data within the report (for example, how variables were measured/created, data sources, sample, time period, geography,…).

    • At least one model should contain some kind of qualitative data – and the interpretation

    • At least one model should contain an interaction term and the interpretation

    • MLR.3 Perfect Collinearity (incl. any collinearity in your variables)

    • MLR.4 Zero conditional mean (incl. discussions and analysis related to omitted variables, outliers, correlation vs. causation)

    • You must analyze your residuals

  • Provide a clear and meaningful interpretation of your preferred model (including discussing the statistical significance as well as the magnitude of the effect and your confidence in your results and the model).
