Many women tend to choose water birth since it is an
empowering and satisfying birth experience. According to Burns et al.
(2012), water birth is frequently a preferred option to avoid the use of
drugs and interventions during labour. Its benefits include: buoyancy
and mobility, limited use of pain relief and reduced anxiety. However,
evidence suggests that there is controversy between maternity care
professionals with regard to the safety of this birthing technique. The
temperature of the water used during labour could also pose a threat to
the fetus. While these concerns are valid, results of a comparative
study between water and land births demonstrate that water is not a
thermal risk to the mother and the fetus. Thus, there seems to be a lack
of consensus about water birth as a labour
