This report gives a detail about the skills that are required in Career Management with regard to the chosen career. Valentich defines Career Management as the strategies to be implemented for career orientation and choosing a specific career. The chosen career herein is being a Pastry Chef. In order to become a successful Pastry Chef, it is further required to research all the career options that are available in order to pursue the achievement of the same. The preferences of the chosen careers are listed on the basis of priority in Appendix A. The aim is to pursue the career as a Pastry Chef in either hotels or famous restaurants and cafes. After making choice of the career, certain goals need to be set in order to achieve the plans and objectives that have been set. The short term goal involves learning of basic skills and knowledge that shall be required in the career. The medium term goal includes achievement of the goal of successfully working as a Pastry Chef in one out of the four preferences that have been laid down in the Appendix A. The long term goal would be to develop an understanding of the functioning and systematic working in order to achieve the goal of setting up a self-owned bakery outlet or café. Appendix B lists the learning and the career goals to be achieved in the next ten years. In conclusion, the report helps in analyzing the career opportunities and preparation of goals to be achieved in the coming years and attain success in the chosen career.

1.0 Introduction

The process of career planning requires achievements and progress in different stages in the career model in order to achieve success and outshine in the future. These steps include:

  • Self Development: It is necessary to self analyze and understand ones’ own needs and desires rather than copying each other and running in a rat race. It is necessary for an individual to understand that his sole competition is he himself and not the other co-workers or job seekers. An individual with great intellectual and self development skills will always excel in performing well in his career.

3.0 Goal Setting

The career options available which have been laid down in Appendix A are categorized on the basis of priority.

Short term goals: The short term goal would be to learn the basic skills and master upon them. It is only possible to experiment and innovate once there is clarity with regards to the existing basic methods and means which are required in a working environment both in terms of baking and in terms of the surroundings and environment. Working in big level companies and hotels requires a task of understanding the working skills along with other etiquettes and manners. The short term goal would be to grab a hold of all these material skills and learn as much as possible for future growth.

Medium term goals: Medium term goal shall be performing considerable well at the job post and getting recognition for the same. Certain promotion and increment in salary would be the motive at this stage in order to improve the resume and job profile so that it is possible to expand the career opportunities.

A pastry chef would be continuously involved in assisting the chef in making and baking during all the meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner services. He shall be continuously involved in assisting Chef de Partie in setting up and expanding the Pastry Kitchen. This particular job requires prior chef apprenticeship and work experience of two years as a Commis chef in a hotel or restaurant with certain decent standards. His skills should also include hygiene knowledge.

Working as a pastry chef at Marriot shall require learning to work in a multi cultural environment. It required proficiency in English, high quality services, hygiene standards, etc. Specific training and apprenticeship has to be undergone in order to succeed as a well trained chef who is aware of the working environment and the professional skills required at work.
