To begin with, punishment is act or time period in which a person have to face many hurdles. The punishment and rehabilitation contain many different acts which person may not do in their life before. When any criminal do crime the punishment is given to the criminal. The main motive of giving punishment to the criminals is that the criminal can relies their mistake and never repeat the same mistake in the future. To cite an example- when a criminal do drug supply and caught by the police and then their case in applied in the court after the decision to court then get a punishment to stay in the jail for many years or for some months. So, this a punishment given to then in jail they have to do many works, they have to perform many different tasks. It is very hard time to stay in jail and perform that works which are offer to them my the jail staff. Moreover, it is also hard to stay long time without their family. So, many criminals can relies their mistake after facing thus hard time and they never do that crime in their life. Furthermore, There is evidence that rehabilitation (including within prison) reduces crime and can be cost effective. Economic analysis therefore, reinforces the idea that punishment is not the best solution for reducing the harmful impact of crime. Apart from this, when a criminal come to know their mistake and take a decision to ever repeat that mistake again this is way that will really reduce the crime rate. Punishing the criminals will perform very important role to over come the crime rates. Moreover the punishment have many different objectives such as, maintenance , barricade, the threshold, retribution and many more. Thus punishment and rehabilitation able to reduce the crime rate upto some extant in the world.
On the other side, why punishment and rehabilitation are not completely successful to reduce the crime rate. There are many reasons for this. First and foremost, Public humiliation, public executions and unusual punishment are proved to be effective and extremely valuable in the improvement of crime rate and improvement in social discipline. It was constantly used in the former times and is still used in modern era. As this been practiced for years as punishment for petty offenders. In Japan for example adulterers were publicly humiliated and exposed and sometimes even unusual punishments were given the main reason was to show to the people so that they can see and mock the offenders with also having a fear that if they commit same crime then they could be the next one.
