CFD tasks

1) Develop a suitable approach to modelling the rotation of the rotor. The rotor rotates at 1800rpm. There are two options available in SolidWorks Flow Simulation and you are expected to evaluate the use of both. Details on the modelling of rotating regions is available within the SolidWorks help system and supporting documents. The two methods you need to evaluate are:

a. The time averaged approach.

b. The sliding mesh approach.

1) You are required to explore the application of these approaches and the fundamental differences between the two methods [2]. Make sure you record your observations regarding their application and computational costs etc. as you will be required to comment on them during your final submission. For the sliding mesh transient solution you must make sure that you have achieved the pumps steady state performance.

2) Use your CFD model to generate a pump characteristic curve. It is suggested that you set a range of suitable pressure differentials across the pump and determine the resulting volumetric flow through the pump.

3) Use your CFD results and other information available to produce evidence that your CFD model has correct boundary conditions, produces results that are independent of domain and mesh and are physically believable.

4) Use your model to investigate the ability of the pump to lift solid particles from a surface 0.1m below the inlet pipe and convey them to the outlet pipe. A particle is deemed to be successfully lifted if it flows through the pump in a reasonable time (60s). The particle diameters and material will be made available at the start of the project work.

5) Draw appropriate conclusions about your CFD modelling process, pump performance and limitations of the particle study.
