The drive train and drive train assembly are very important part of wind turbine in generation of energy. The rotations of wind turbine’s rotor and hub are converted into electrical energy using the drive train. Generally, the drive train assembly of a wind turbine comprises of following component: main bearings, main shaft, gearbox, brake, and generator.

Due to the rotating components and changes in wind speed, the drivetrain module components are subjected to highly dynamic and random cycling loading through its lifetime, which can result in failures in both ultimate strength and fatigue strength. Both failure cases are required to be considered in the design of drive train assembly of a wind turbine.

Critically evaluate the key factors involved in advanced machine system design and how these affect system response

Evaluate the effectiveness of available sources of information in the investigation of complex engineering problems

Task

Working in groups of five (unless agreed otherwise with lecturer) you are required to use a range of design tools and techniques to develop and systematically select a concept proposal to satisfy the needs of your client. Your solution should be innovative and not simply a copy or minor development of a current solution (you must demonstrate rigour in the process of arriving at your solution). Each student has to write an individual critical review/discussion for each section for his/her assignment.

An individual submission by each student should include:

➢ A report (2000 words) to be submitted through Turnitin.

➢ A zip folder should be uploaded through the submission link provided on the ENG3021 NILE

The zip folder should contain: SolidWorks assembly model, all component models, all 2D drawings. (You must work in Solidworks).
