Assessment 2: 2,500 word essay (60% of the module mark) Your essay should answer one of the options below and be 2,500 words (+/- 10%) in either Microsoft WORD or rich text format (.rtf). (.wps, .odt and other formats are not compatible with the university turnitin computer systems.) It should be fully referenced and include a reference list in the APA 6 referencing style. Submit the essay electronically via the TurnItIn submission link for the essay by the above deadline. No tutor reassessment opportunities are available for this assignment. Submitting your presentation, return of your mark and feedback You must submit an electronic copy of your essay as either a single Microsoft WORD or rich text file (.rtf) (.wps, .odt and other formats are not compatible with the university turnitin computer systems) via the turnitin link for 1.15pm on the deadline date. Written feedback and a mark will be provided via grademark and made available no later than 3 working weeks, which is 3rd June 2019. These marks will be subject to moderation. If they can be returned early I will contact you to let you know. Essay Question: Choose ONE of the following groups that have been considered in part 2 of the lecture programme: 1. Older prisoners 2. Younger prisoners 3. Families of prisoners (you may discuss the whole family unit or focus on either partners or children) 4. Prisoners with mental health problems 5. Female prisoners 6. Minority group prisoners (BAME or religious group or sexual identity) 7. Long term prisoners and their release from prison With reference to appropriate theory, legislation and/or guidelines on best practice in supporting the dignity and wellbeing of prisoners, critically consider what the unintended impacts of imprisonment are on your chosen group, and why these are so keenly experienced. You will need to demonstrate that you appreciate that not all prisoners are the same, or that all institutions in the penal system are the same. In answering your essay question you should explore the likely different experiences by either different groups of prisoners, or by prisoners in different types of penal institutions. As you are focussing on one group you can do this by showing how your group varies from others. As this is an honours level module, you will need to be critical and discursive about why these differences occur, and what impacts they may have on the prisoners. Look at the lecture notes for ideas on some of the main differences that occur. LOC3: Critically examine the relationship of penal structures to the variety of experiences within the penal system You will need to demonstrate in the essay that you understand that the structure of the penal system, or specific elements of the system, effect the daily experiences of those living and working within the system. When answering your essay question you need to ensure that you clearly show how the experiences of prisoners that you are writing about are related to prison conditions, working practices, regimes or policies. You will need to be critical about the causal nature of this, however. Do these structures cause the prisoners to feel a certain way, or to experience prison in a particular way? It may be that they bring with them into the prison some of these issues that relate to their experience, for example. You will also need to consider if these effects are positive or negative for the prisoner, or, indeed, neutral!. LOC5: Demonstrate appropriate key and IT skills You will need to produce a professionally written essay. Ensure that you meet the word count (2,500 word +/- 10%) and that the essay is word processed using Microsoft WORD or rich text format (.rtf). It should be double or 1.5 line spaced in Arial or New Times Roman 12 point font. It should be fully referenced with a references list in the APA 6 referencing style, based on academic and authoritive sources. Write formally in the 3rd person (e.g. do not use 1st person: ‘I’, ‘me’ or the 2nd person: ‘you’, ‘we’). For example: ‘This essay will explore….’ (and not: ‘I will explore…’.).
