CW1: Topic - Music Reference to listen to and compare: James – Just Like Fred Astaire (Millionaires – 1999) U2 - Magnificent (No Line on the Horizon – 2009) Key points to follow step by step template. Is there a general approach to the production/mixing of the track? Are there any unusual/interesting treatments in the mix? …and how effective are they? How is the interest/attention of the listener maintained?In comparing the mixes what are the notable differences? .. and how significant is the period in which it they were produced? What have you learned from analysing these mixes that you can apply to your own work?  How might this alter your approach to listening to music?  How might this alter your approach to producing music? 40% weighting: Learning Outcome 1 Essay (2,000 words maximum): You will produce a written investigation into the development and application of mixing and post-production techniques from recent popular music history (1960s to present day).The effectiveness, appropriateness and comparison of techniques, with reference to specific artists/recordings will be discussed. CW2 The report will be submitted via Turnitin online submission system via the module area of Course Resources. Submissions need to be made using a standard text document using black text on white paper in 11 point font size. Further guidance is available via the Turnitin submission interface. Working individually and in small groups you will choose a recording from a selection of pre-recorded Pro Tools sessions. This will consist of individual tracks. You will then produce the following: Individually you will work with the supplied tracks to produce the following: An album mix – full length, in stereo. This will be mastered and submitted as a 24 bit 48Khz file. The file title must include your name and student ID As a group:Using the individual tracks you will produce a full-length surround sound mix. Use a combination of static and moving placement techniques. But ensure that the mix is still reasonably true to the original version. This will be mastered and converted into 6 channels at 24 bit, 48kHz.  It is vitally important that the finished surround mix is playable by the marking tutor – Please see below the correct method for submitting the mix. NB: The mixes may be produced in any of the University studio facilities or in any external facility. If you use any non-professional studio, please make sure you check your mixes in one of the University studios. All mixes should be checked for optimum overall level and the starts and ends must be suitably tidy. All mixes should be referenced to commercially available music in a similar genre. Audio Submission: Your mixes must be submitted as wav files direct onto a specified host computer. **Very Important** These individual wav files MUST be playable on MacOS. Please check them before submission. Some PC based mastering programs produced files that are not compatible. Individually you will write and submit a report (1000 word max) on the whole process, the problems and solutions and any appropriate conclusions drawn. This report must be word-processed and spell checked. You must clearly indicate the members of your surround group
