Topic(s): Week 2 Lecture – Leading and managing effective teams. Note that this lecture is a starting guide. The lectures are related to each other (think about two tornadoes - we see them as separate things, but the reality is, they are connected). Submission type: Via Turnitin Task Overview: "Teams are a complete waste of time, energy, and money. You are better off outsourcing your work to individual contractors". State whether you agree or disagree with this statement and justify your answer with reference to the academic literature. Office 365: Office 365 is available free to Macquarie University students. Click the link below to download and install Office 365 https://students.mq.edu.au/support/technology/service-desk/office-365 Preparation/Instructions: Structure and Advice The structure of your essay is extremely important and will be crucial in communicating your ideas to the reader.  Introductions An introduction is a road map of your essay. It is NOT an introduction to the subject "Teams". Your introduction must state: The aim of your essay The key sections of your essay Major findings from each section of your essay A concluding statement Your introduction should be 1 paragraph and should be no longer than 150 words. It's a good idea to create a framework for your essay (section breakdown). That way you can write a model introduction and, once you have finished, go back and re-write it. Remember, the introduction is the last thing that gets done before you submit. Body The body of your essay should be structured according to the key points you want to make. There are a number of points you need to cover - see the task overview above - use these to help you structure your essay. Remember that each paragraph must make an important and relevant point. Your points should be well supported. Start by doing searches in the universities databases and google scholar. Find articles that you think are relevant and point them aside. Build up a range of relevant articles (probably about 6-8) and read them, taking notes along the way - these notes should be important points that you want to make. Use them to build the structure of your essay's body. Paragraphs should have their own internal structure. They should be approximately 125-150 words long. This is long enough to make a major point, but not so long that you start to lose track. Use a claim, data, warrant structure. Make a claim, provide data that supports the claim, and then write about why it matters - what are the implications of that claim. This will keep you on track. Conclusion This is similar to your introduction. You must summarise the key points identified in your report. It should have no new information. References Referencing is vital. It provides support for your arguments, gives you evidence and credibility, and acknowledges the work of others. You must use the Harvard Reference style (see iLearn and the library for more information). You need in-text references as well as a final reference list for all references mentioned in your report. You will lose marks if your reference list is incomplete and/or inconsistent. Failure to reference will result in you receiving a 0 for your essay - this includes having a 'reference list' and no in text references. You must have a minimum of 5 PEER REVIEWED JOURNAL references - sourced via the Macquarie University Library databases (use the Google Scholar link on the library's search page). You may reference the textbook if you wish, however, it does not count towards the minimum number of references. Importantly, meeting the minimum number of references does not constitute a 'pass'. You must use referencing intelligently and integrate it through your report to provide evidence and support for your position/recommendation. Referencing is not difficult and there are lots of resources that can help you make sure you adhere to the guidelines. You MUST review the referencing guide created by the library and available on the MGMT1002 Unit iLearn Site. The university provides free access to Endnote, a reference management system. You can download Endnote here. Headings Headings are a useful way of sign posting your work, and you are encouraged to use them (yes, even in an essay!). Make sure they are descriptive (NOT generic terms such as 'Body') and that they are numbered correctly. Cover Page You should include a cover page with your name and student ID. Formatting You should use a standard font in a reasonable size (Arial, Calibri, Century Gothic etc. size 11 or 12) with line spacing of at least 1.15, a blank line between each paragraphs, and justified text. Word Count You should include the word count in the footer of your report.
