What Similarities and differences characterized the migrant experiences of the Chinese in San Francisco, the Oblingers in Nebraska, and Native Americans?

Answer:

The Chinese immigrants came to the United States in three periods 1849-1882, 1882-1865, 1965 to the present time, now. The first Chinese migration began immediately after the Chinese gold rush and ended after the passage of the Chinese exclusion of 1882.The Chinese immigrants came to the United Stated first of all with the main aim of getting rich and sending the money they would earn back home. Some wanted to even work for a while and then return home to China after several years of wealth accumulation. America served as a symbol of something greater than monetary prosperity as it symbolized some light and hope of freedom, from intolerance based upon one’s views. It’s important to note that the major reason for these immigrants was the economic hardships, because of the growing dominance over china after its defeat of the opium war in 1839-1842. (Johnson)

The Chinese immigrants in the late 19th century made a profound effect in the United States. Mostly they were the laborers for the American growing economy. Chinese factory workers helped in the civil war. They worked in cigar, shoe. and wool mills industries and even began the era of railway building. Some worked as small merchants, gardeners, laundry workers, and farmers.

The Native Americans are commonly referred to as the American Indians. Their history in the United States came to be with the settlement of the Americans by the Paleo-Indian. The Native Americans were first encountered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Though this group became extinct by 1650 due to epidemic diseases, warfare, and violence between their tribes and at the hands of Europeans explorers and colonists, leading to displacement. It’s important to note that Native Americans played a very important role in the revolutionary, colonial and the early national America. (Johnson) They seemed to be a few and even in character, they were perceived to be brutal or noble. They mostly shared similar family values, religious rituals and lived with the extended family. They sustained their way of living by hunting, fishing and even farming. During the last three decades of the 20th century, it’s been demonstrated that to understand the American experience and American history one must include American Indians- Robbie Ethridge, Creek Country.

Nebraska, majorly described as a’ sea of grass’ became a territory and thereafter surveyors set imaginary markers to physically place sections, townships, precincts, and acreages. The surveyors thereafter allowed the United States to sell the public land to railroads, private companies, and even individual. Each place had its own challenges and therefore settlers had to adapt to survive. When settlers arrived they realized that land should be owned by individuals, corporations, or the government. As the settlers arrived Uttah Oblinger was one of them. He was one of the first settlers in Nebraska leaving his baby and wife behind. There are letters 318 letters (1862-1911) he wrote to his wife in preparation for their arrival. He indicated that the land had nothing but grass but one thing for sure is the land is fertile and that he would plow sod and built a sod house. He also writes how the plain land is a refuge to the poor and that they would live in peace with the companionship of their loved ones undisturbed by those that have heretofore held under their almost exclusive control.

In conclusion, the Chinese in San Francisco, the Oblingers in Nebraska, and Native Americans have major differences than similarities. Indeed the above mentioned were poor and were in dire need of a better future for their children and themselves. Its noted, eventually, they both made great economic contributions to the growth the economy of the United State.
