1. Explain the role of high level communication skills in professional engineering and research practice.
2. Explain the effects of cultural background on communication idioms.

Answer:

Introduction:

Communication is essential in the engineering profession. For Engineers tasked with supervisory projects and leading or rather overseeing teams of workers, communication becomes vital. We deal with technical and complex work however we do not have the same expertise therefore the need for effective communication for effective corporation and work. competency as well is essential in the engineering career. My creative and proactive demeanor has helped me in conducting my technical expertise equally to my communication skills. I have a large scope of knowledge in my engineering career. My disciplined character has helped me read extensively and comprehensively. This has helped me in applying the knowledge in the field. It has helped me understand and identify the interdisciplinary relationship with other sectors of the such as the commercial and political contexts. This element of knowledge is key

for any professional engineer for purposes of execution of technical duties.

In the ever-advancing technology, the computer based technical knowledge is valuable. I realize that it is essential in automation of workflow of an engineer. Learning of scripting language is essential in increasing your knowledge. Therefore, I will be learning the various options of computer-based applications that are valuable in the aspects of the engineering work. The variety of technical skills can be improved also by getting advanced knowledge base from the interrelationship with other areas that indirectly or directly affect the engineering aspect of work. I plan to use the internet in increasing my knowledge base since I can interact and share experiences with my fellow engineers. Having a wide range of knowledge base is very valuable and increases al lot of competency level of any engineer.

Competency is crucial in the profession of an engineer. Competency helps an engineer to make meaningful contribution especially in group activities. It also enhances relevancy of knowledge and up to date. This helps one in becoming more effective in the workplace.

Economic globalization is an essential aspect in the growth of the world economically. There has been fast globalization because of the rapid advancement of technology and science. The market economic platform has extensively developed throughout the globe due to a lot of cross-border labour division. The interdependence of countries in terms of expertise has greatly increased the globalization rates. In the field of engineering in the past, cultural differences ranging from the individual country business culture and the cultural behavior of its citizens.

According to Hall 1996 classical study, there were problems between Germany and United states about their business approaches. America advocated for an open-door approach whereas Germany advocated for closed door approach (Ircha,1999). This difference brought a lot of misunderstanding. However, there has been great improvements in the communication globally leading to greater improvements especially in the engineering fields. Engineers work interdependently with each other. The Chinese companies, the American and the Japanese now work interdependently through effective communication and appreciation of individuals cultures. Globalization has made generational engineers to be multinational and multicultural.

Teamwork is part and parcel of engineering works. The technical expertise and workload in engineering workplaces needs a group of technical experts from different fields of engineering therefore the need for group work to effectively carry out their tasks. In a teamwork there is an aspect of trust. Trust is essential for effective completion of tasks. Teamwork involves a lot of people with different expertise hence the members need to cooperate and work together due to the nature of the technical engineering works (Butterflied, 2011). Therefore, for members to cooperate effectively there must trust each other potential in carrying out the tasks as a group. Engineering works have different fields such as technological, civil engineering and electrical. All these engineers must work interdependently for success of any of the tasks they engage in. Therefore, the aspect of trust is very crucial. Trust is vital for a team to work effectively and perfectly.

As a future engineer, I need skills that will contribute for trust among the teams I will be leading. One I will need to be competent, competency is vital in understanding of tasks that are being carried out by your team. This will make them team members have trust in your leadership. Having quality communication skills is an added advantage in the contribution of trust among team members.

As a future engineering leader, cooperation among team members will be priority. Cooperation is key in the success of any team. Moreover, teamwork will work effectively if team members will appreciate each other’s potentiality in carrying out the tasks. I will encourage the team members to work together for the success of the team.

The results by Sageev and Romanowski (2001, P.687) are not surprising as most engineering workloads are mostly technical and engineers are obligated to give direction to the technicians. Communication is key to giving instructions by engineers hence most of their time they can spend in communication. Effective technical communication is a vital aspect in the workplace of engineers.

Through my career episodes and my capabilities scope of understanding, I am envisaging that I will be doing proposals and design reports type of writing.

The most common types of engineering communication that will fit in the heading of oral discussions include such as; design reviews, poster sessions and inspections.

I opine that a professional engineer must have technical skills as well as soft skill for him or her to efficiently work well. Communication is one of the soft skills (Lee, 2003). Effective communication drives the gathering of information and articulation of ideas in a simpler manner. If I get to do masters in any field of engineering, I expect more emphasis on the soft skills since they are more valuable and effective in project completion and success.

As a professional engineer one needs to have skills that will enable them work effectively.  As an engineer having technological base knowledge is vital. This will help you do work effectively since you will save lot of time at your workplace. Technological knowledge is essential in carrying out engineering workloads. In addition, competency is key in the profession of an engineer. This will help employers or rather people have faith in your works. Companies want competent engineers who can help solve out issues in the respective fields of engineering. This characteristic is essential in the professional life of an engineer. Personally, I am multilingual which is an added advantage in terms of diversity. The engineering field is very diverse in terms of workplace therefore the need to know more than one language to serve in more countries. Being creative and innovative is very essential for engineers thus enabling one to sharpen entrepreneurial skills. Engineering is a good career profession that needs a lot of skills for effective execution of duties.
