My chosen career path is to enter the advertising industry and become a PR expert. The biggest opportunity in this industry is that traditional marketing techniques are quickly changing to alternative and renewed ways of marketing. Due to this transition, the role of PR is getting bigger and more instrumental in the marketing mix. However, the biggest challenge in the industry is to keep up with the quick pace of change (Miller, 2013). The different assignments I will undertake as part of the program and the practical experience that I will garner throughout the course will be helpful in developing the necessary skills and abilities to become a competent PR professional.
Journal Entry 3: Let them know you
Situation: My college held an inter-college cultural fest and I was managing the PR team. During one of the festivals, racial insults and slurs were hurled at a group of college students belonging to other college. It became a big issue and our college received lot of criticism for this.
Task: I had to understand the entire story and contact the harassed group of students and issue a condemnation statement.
Action: I spoke with the organizers over phone about the entire episode and then arranged a meeting with the group of harassed students. Next day a statement was released condemning the act, assuring an investigation into the matter and held a deeper discussion about inclusion and freedom of speech on campus.
Result: This action clearly expressed that our college was not trying to hide the incident, rather it conveyed that we do not believe this is what symbolizes us, but it is something we will be taking very seriously. The rest of the cultural fest continued without any protest and similar incident.
