Engl 1107 Shakespeare - Consider Assessment Answers

In Act 1 Scene 5, Lady Macbeth cries, "Come, you spirits/That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here,/And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/Of direst cruelty!" Would you consider Lady Macbeth a witch? Explain why or why not. How does she compare to Zayas’s Lucrecia?

Answer

Macbeth by Shakespeare

I would not consider Macbeth a witch since its only in act one, scene five where there is a possibility of Lady Macbeth being associated with witchcraft. On the passage, Lady Macbeth asks to be filled with evil but even this does not give the confirmation that she’s is a witch. If she were to be a witch, Macbeth would not have to read the letter in order to grasp of the prophecies of the weird sisters that she would become the queen or Thane of Cawdor (Samantha, 2013). She would have discerned earlier of her destiny. In addition, she would have informed her husband of his fate.

Another reason I believe Lady Macbeth could not have been a witch is that she felt guilty for the killings. Since Macbeth desired to know the future of his kingdom in act four, scene one, she seeks out the weird sisters (Samantha, 2013). However, due to informing Macbeth of the prophecy, there is destruction in the kingdom. The witches seem not to have remorse over the destruction and even asks Macbeth to seek more information. Its however arguable that Lady Macbeth has no remorse after the death of Banquo, King Duncan, and Macduff’s wife, however in act five scene one, due to the burden of her guilty conscience, she begins sleepwalking while speaking of her guilt (Samantha, 2013). Lastly, in Shakespeare time, a witch was attributed to be poor, widowed or with no title. However, Lady Macbeth does not fall into that category.

Lucrecia, on the other hand, is a witch. This can be seen when Lucrecia casts a spell on Don Fernando in order to abandon her lover, Dona Juana and follow her (Tamper, 2015). However, both lady Macbeth and Lucrecia try to manipulate the men they love and later commit suicide due to the guilt.
