ENGL1100 | The Black Cat by by Edgar Allan Poe

This will be a chance for you to reflect back on what you’ve learned throughout the course, and write in your favorite genre. In one sense, you can look at this assignment as a chance to develop a topic or textual response you considered doing but decided against earlier in the semester, or also a chance to revisit similar thematic material. You can choose any topic or text to write about – within one of the three genres below – as long as you have a thesis statement and support or develop it with appropriate evidence or research. It will be worth 15% of your final grade in the class.
Day 1: Starting on our last two days of regular class (May 2-4), you’ll be doing some in-class prewriting. This will be graded as Journal 10. It doesn’t need to follow any standard format, and this is for your own benefit in writing the final on the exam day itself. I will collect the outlines written in class and give them back at the final. You may use The Norton Reader, if necessary, and any other sources you want to cite or quote from (bring them with you to class on that day if needed).

Day 2: This will be a class of one hour and fifty minutes, scheduled during finals week. See Blackboard for date, time, and place.

Choose ONE of the following genres of writing:

Narrative – a personal story that uses details, description, and point of view to illustrate a theme, or to retell a specific moment in your life. For this assignment, you could consider creating a sequel of sorts to your origin story, taking the reader up to the present day, or possibly involving your experience or personal growth as a result of being in this class, or others you’ve taken this semester. (This was Writing Project 1.)
