The relationship between Cem and Mahmut begins when Cem and her mother were abandoned by his father who was a pharmacists and left wing activist.at this point,Cem is left fatherless.at the tender age, when Cem was preparing to take his entrance exams to university, he then afterwards meets Mahmut who is his master and also who is a well digger so as to fund his preparatory courses. Then relationship between Cem and Mahmut is one of master-apprentice with time Cem develops a father figure for Cem that ends up forming a potential bond between them.

Cem and Mahmut begins to experience tension in their relationship when Cem tells a story that he had read in an Istanbul bookshop,thinking he could strike fear into the heart of his master.

Comparing the representation of fathers in the two novels above, The Red Haired Woman and Atonement there is connection on how fathers are represented such that fathers are abandoners of families. In The Red Haired Woman novel, Cem and her mother were abandoned hence forcing Cem to feel he lacks paternal supervision due to that abandonment  as he gets to bond with Mahmut. Likewise in Atonement, Jack is also seen as a very busy man who spends all of his active time at the ministry without even sparing some time for his children who are Briony, Cecilia and Leon and his wife Emily.

Abandonment by fathers in the two novels has some impact on their children. Like for instance, Cem in the red haired woman novel and Briony, Cecilia and Leon in atonement struggles to believe they are worthy of love. Cem reaches a point where he feels he lacks paternal supervision. The consequence of father absence to any child reveals its damage when the child attempts to form and sustain an adult intimate relationship as Cem meets a red haired woman who was his father’s former lover and he ends up sleeping with her though he doesn’t marry her.
