1.1 Introduction

This project is intended for evaluating the efficiency of conversational systems that are used as Intelligent Virtual Assistant (IVA) by comparing them with command and order system. The evolution of user interface has been taken into next level with the implementation of modern technology. In this modern world, Virtual Assistants are being used for various functionalities among industries (Harvey et al. 2015). However, there are two types of systems being used in Virtual Assistants hence this study focuses on efficiency of both systems.

1.2 Problem Statement

In this modern world, there is rise of various Intelligent Virtual Assistants but basically they are command and control system oriented. The major problem that is rising in the context to Virtual Assistants is the lack of accuracy as well as personalization. Hence, this project is undertaken for analyzing the efficiency of using conversational systems in Virtual Assistants.

1.3 Aim of the project

This project is aimed towards analyzing the effectiveness of the Intelligent Virtual Assistants that use conversational systems to that of those using command and control systems. In this project, the study will be conducted on then conversational systems along with command and control systems being used in Intelligent Virtual Assistants.

1.4 Objectives of the project 

This project is related to comparing conversational systems used in Virtual assistants with command and control systems so the objectives prepared for this study are as below:

  • To determine the factors that are contributing towards rise of Intelligent Virtual Assistants (IVA).
  • To analyze the impact of Virtual assistants on customer care.
  • To evaluate the efficiency of conversational systems used in Virtual assistants than command and control systems.

2. Literature Review

2.1 Concept of Intelligent Virtual Assistant

The concept “Intelligent Virtual Assistant” is referred to as an artificial system that can emulate the interaction of human for performing various tasks such as customer service of providing support to users of an application or system (Lamontagne et al. 2014). There is proliferation of the virtual assistants in this modern world due to the existence of deep neural networks along with machine learning and other developments being made in AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies.  

2.2 Use of Virtual Assistants

In industries, there is wide usage of Virtual assistants for a variety of applications and one such context is that they can be used as personal assistant (Eidlin and Samsonovich 2017). The Virtual assistants allows the consumers to complete various tasks such as Apple’s Siri provides an interactive interface for connected home and even cars. Another rising role of Virtual assistants is that of customer service or a sales agent.

2.3 Rise of Intelligent Virtual Assistants

The use of Intelligent Virtual Assistants is growing heavily in large companies whether related to technology or auto manufacturing like BMW. The interactions that are driven by intelligence is becoming a latest trend in technology as customers are nowadays more frequently uses technology (Aylett and Ballin 2013). As the impact of technological innovation, customers are now comfortable to speak with robots and hence increasing productivity.

2.4 Influence of Intelligent Virtual Assistants

The introduction of Intelligent Virtual Assistants in the modern world is replacing the use of traditional IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems (Chung et al. 2017). The traditional systems are being viewed as outdated and ineffective by the customers whereas the Intelligent Virtual Assistants are improving the customer experience with the help of consumer-friendly approach.

3. Research Methodology

3.1 Introduction

This section illustrates upon the method that will be used for conducting the study on effectiveness of conversational systems in Intelligent Virtual Assistants. The approach for the research to be conducted is described in this section along with the strategy that will be followed to achieve objectives of the research.

3.3 Research Strategy

It is defined as the process of developing draft question for getting answers and analyzing the acquired data. The questions are drafted by considering the aims and objectives of the project that has been stated in the introduction chapter. The data collection in context to this particular project will conducted by studying the existing studies on the selected topic (Hasler, Tuchman and Friedman 2013). The improper management of time along with physical and environmental factors may affect this process hence proper planning have to be done for overcoming the inhibiting factors.

3.2 Research approach

The term “Research Approach” is considered as an action plan for collecting data with the help of various techniques so as to achieve an appropriate result. Qualitative and Quantitative are the two main strategies that are used for collection of data and the selection of appropriate technique depends on the identified problems, purpose behind the investigation. The technique that has been chosen for this particular research is Qualitative as it is basically an exploratory research. The source of data will be secondary means that case studies will be considered for collecting data and analyzing them to achieve outcomes of the research.

3.4 Outcomes

The discussions carried out in the above sections clearly represents the approach and strategy that will be followed for the conducting this study. It has been identified that Qualitative and Quantitative are the common methods for conducting research study. For this particular study, secondary research has been chosen as the suitable method as it involves analysis of case studies or other literature available on the chosen topic.   

5. Statement of Deliverables

The outcomes that will be achieved from conducting this project on Intelligent Virtual Assistants are discussed below:

Brief concept of conversational Virtual Assistants: This means that the project will help to understand the concept of conversational systems being used in Intelligent Virtual Assistants.

Impact of Virtual Assistants: The project will also help to determine the impact of the using Virtual assistants for various business functions.

Determining the efficiency of conversational systems in Intelligent Virtual Assistants: The systems that are being presently used in Virtual Assistants are more concentric towards command and control rather than conversational systems (Sun, Chen and Rudnicky 2016). Hence, this project will help to highlight the importance of using conversational systems in Virtual Assistants.
