Which you describe the importance of adjusting your altimeter to station pressures along your route of flight, identifying the effects if you do not adjust the altimeter.

Include the relationship between atmospheric pressure and the types of altitude in your description.

Answer

Introduction

An altimeter is a tool that measures the height of the land surface or an article such as an aircraft (Nelson, 2014). Therefore, this paper looks at the importance of adjusting altimeter to station pressure along the route of flight; and the effects of not adjusting the altimeter.

Importance of adjusting altimeter to station pressure along the route of flight

The airplane altimeter barometer requires to be adjusted properly as far as flight in that station is concerned. The adjustment of altimeter is important because it helps the pilot find the flight level by determining the regular; “pressure position appropriate for flying by the given airplane as compared to flight levels above the transition altitude (Warntz, 2015).” Secondly, the pilot is able to determine the altitude the flight can flight to above the sea level by manipulating the “airstrip compression setting (Warntz, 2015). The Altimeter pressure setting shows the altitude above airfield. When the barometer is not set, the sub-scale compression setting may have consequence in abnormality from vacant elevation or flying level (Nelson, 2014).

Effects of not adjusting the altimeter

Failure to set the required pressure for the flight can lead to the plane diverting from the safe altitude resulting the following: “loss of separation from other traffic and even collision with other aircraft or the ground.” Situational alertness can be lost because of not appreciating the correctness of pressure setting. In such a situation, the pilot may incorrectly estimate the closeness of the ground which possibly leads to an unstabilized approach or collision with the ground during landing (Warntz, 2015).

Atmospheric Pressure and Altitude

Atmospheric pressure decreases with the increase in altitude of a place. Generally, the air particles in the atmosphere are held closer to the earth’s crust by the force of gravity; the air pressure reduces rapidly at lower altitudes followed by slower decrease at a higher altitude. The two parameters have an inverse relationship, in that when the height increases, the atmospheric pressure decreases.
