Difference is not an easy thing to accommodate. It's not simple to embrace and respect and defend cultures that are different to your own. That's the nature if you like of human relationships. We gotta work and build on it. And it’s by having these sorts of debates, getting people to think about it and talk about it that we're going to move along.”

Answer:

Yes, I passed the official Australian citizenship practice test. I had provided three incorrect answers, and the questions were as follows-

  • Which official symbol of Australia identifies Commonwealth property?
  • Which of these statements about passports is correct?
  • What is a referendum?
  • Which of these is an example of freedom of speech?
  • What do we remember on Anzac Day?

Pauline Hanson’s speech, in my opinion, as been successful in highlighting the challenges and issues faced by immigrants in Australia. Pauline has put forward the views and opinions of immigrants in Australia and has thrown light on their believes and feelings regarding the constant discrimination that they face. The speech has been straightforward and puts up questions for the federal government to answer. The speech has a reflection of the plight of the immigrants of Australia and the voice of many.

I am a recent migrant to Australia, and this speech has motivated me to fight for my rights. Migrants are faced with a wide range of challenges against the prejudice done against them and the impact of socio-economic context. There is a lack of the proper platform where the migrants can put their opinions forward and express their concerns adequately. The plight of the migrants often remains unheard amidst the other debatable concerns arising in the country. I, therefore, feel overwhelmed to come across such a speech addressing the federal parliament that has the potential to make a deep impact on the concerned stakeholders.

I agree with the thoughts of Pauline as she has spoken in alignment with what the majority of the migrants would opine in the present era. Migrants in Australia often fall victims of exploitation and discrimination, reducing their quality of life. They policy regarding immigration is not considered for appropriate review against the changes occurring in the society. There is an urgent need of scrutinising the policy and making suitable changes in it.

I feel it was a long due but significant apology to the members of the Stolen Generation and their families. A sense of satisfaction has been instilled in me in after coming across this apology that has attempted to make positive changes in the lives of the indigenous population.

It is indeed an emotional experience as the beliefs and credence of the indigenous population has been moved due to this apology. These individuals would be helped to rekindle the sense of belonging that they strive to have within the country.

I agree with the apology since this initiative would make the country less racist and avoid the repentance of history in future that would possibly divide the nation on the social and political basis.

Since I do not belong to the indigenous population, I have not being affected directly. However, I perceive this action to be considerate enough to make a history in the country.

All individuals across cultures need to have a sense of belonging. The reason for this is the imbibed ability to survive in this world. Having a sense of belonging enables an individual to perceive his surroundings from a different point of view. Man is a social animal, and the communication with the society instils the sense of belonging, eventually changing the course of the life of all human beings. The need to belong is undoubtedly instinctual and thus a critical part of our well-being.

I belong to the country I am from and look up to my traditions and customs to guide by way of life. Though I am an immigrant and have made best efforts to blend with the culture of this country, I have not left behind my traditional values and customs and resort to them in different contexts.

Any individual who comes across different cultures and traditions within this own space fits in this context. Others, who are not exposed to diversity in cultures and traditions do not fit in. It is for all individuals to decide how to accommodate other cultures and whether to perceive and defend other cultures.

I have the inspiration that one must admirably respect other cultures, while not being achingly slow to defend his own. We all are products of our own cultures, experiences and upbringing. It is the natural tendency to follow one own’s culture and discard those that are different. It might not be easy to embrace other cultures, but doing so definitely, brings positive changes in one’s life. Opening up to other’s religion, culture and traditions eliminates stereotypical and racial discriminations and fosters building up relationships. I feel communication and effective relationships built with those who are different from us facilitates mutual respect, understanding and belonging. For me, embracing and defending other cultures is equally important to be tolerant towards others.

The term White Australia Policy refers to the different historical policies that prevented individuals of non-European ancestry to immigrate to Australia. It describes the approach Australian Federation had towards migration applications from certain countries. No single specific policy was established, however, the term was used for describing the set of existing policies designed to inhibit people from the Pacific Islands and Asia to migrate to Australia. The polices were eventually abolished between the years 1949 and 1973.

I have had experience of being subjected to discrimination on the grounds that I am in immigrant in this country. I have faced discrimination at the local community function where I have been called racist names and have been told to ‘go home’.

Though angry and agitated initially, I had quickly composed myself and tried to maintain a calm attitude. I persisted having a friendly attitude towards those who got engaged in the judgement of individuals on the basis of his culture and ethnic background.

The experience of undergoing discrimination have made a deep on me. I have realised that the only way to eliminate discrimination is not to allow it have negative impacts on an individual. It is only through courage, communication and mutual respect that discrimination and racism can be irradicated.
