K200 Construction Management For Mersey Gateway Project

Introduction

This study shall essentially cover various aspects related to the details related to leadership as a concept and function applied for the completion of construction of the different roads as part of the Mersey Gateway Project. The various issues that shall be faced (followed with the solution) with the undertaking of the role of a civil Engineer (as the main overseer in the project) shall be related with various concepts of leadership and presented here. Further, the actions that shall be taken to ensure completion work shall also be projected in here.

Ways by which the aspects of leadership shall be dealt with in order to ensure proper performance of all activ

ities

There are a huge number of actions that have to be done in order to ensure the proper completion of the work and confederation of all the needful. Things such as bringing in of raw materials, making the designs of the bridges and roads, arranging and directing the labour force and organizing and using all the machinery requires a collaborative pattern of work and in order to ensure this, a strict command over the activities (autocratic leadership style) and an accurate essence of leadership has to be maintained (Walker, 2015). In order to ensure performance of all required activities, things mentioned below have to be done as part of leadership:

• Workforce has to be constantly guided and they should be helped in need: The workforce has to be guided and the techniques have to show and made them understand which they shall apply in order to undertake the construction work (Sher et al. 2016). The need to be taught the use of different machineries and understand the things as per directions in the blueprint.
• The workforce has to be constantly motivated: Workforce has to be motivated so that they finish the work within time. They have to be filled with positive vibes and confidence so that they may easily do their work with full enthusiasm.
• Smooth communication has to be ensured: Any issues faced by the workers have to be known and quick actions have to be taken. For knowing their issues, smooth and hassle free communication have to be maintained with them (Halpin et al. 2017). They have to be asked about their progress and overall experiences.
• Valuation of progress, performance appraisal techniques and training have to be used:The work progress of the employees have to be made. If they perform in a better way and finish each of the task properly and within the time limit, they have to be heavily rewarded. If they fail, they have to be further trained in order to boost their efficiency (Tabassi et al. 2016). This shall help in the timely and proper completion of all the work.
• Change in plan has to be ensured in need (adaptability):If situation arises and demand a change in the plan, series of events, use of techniques or the entire blueprint of the bridge, the necessary steps have to be taken in order to ensure systematic amendments in them.  This can only be done with the presence of effective kind of leadership.

Working with ethical values: Ways in which it will be employed while working on the project

Upholding ethical values is one of the key prerequisites of the completion of a project. There are certain moral principles that need to be adhered to in order to ensure a good public image and also to benefit both the employees and the management. There are a lot of risks that shall be involved in the execution of the work. It has to be made sure that the workers are provided sufficient protection against such risks. Also, superior quality raw materials should be used so that the roads are durable. In the construction of the roadway the following ethical concerns have to be adhered to:

1. Ensuring proper safety of the workforce: The construction of roads requires the use of extensive machinery and heavy building materials. Therefore, it needs to be understood that the workplace shall pose quite a number of dangers for the workers. They should be handed proper safety materials and there should be a diligent supervision whether safety standards are being followed. It shall also be the responsibility of the organisation to provide for the treatment of the employees should they meet any kind of emergency.
2. Use of proper raw materials: Superior quality building material has to be used so that the roads are able to withstand use over a prolonged period of time (Rumane, 2016). Bad condition of roads often contributes to accidents. Being the chief engineer of the project, I do not want to be complicit in such undesirable circumstances.
3. Timely completion of the work: Roads ensure proper transport and communication opportunities for large number of people. Therefore, all efforts should be directed towards completion of the work within the assigned deadline. The workforce shall have to be motivated to deliver their tasks within time.  
4. Transparency in allocation of funds: Since public money is spent in the construction of roads, the funds should be used in a productive manner and every expenditure shall have to be accounted for.

Conclusion

Therefore, it can be observed that the above task is a quite complex one and involves the proper execution of the role of the leader. There are several diverse aspects of the work that need to be managed and supervised simultaneously so that it can be ensured that the work progresses smoothly. The ethical issues that concern the present work have also been highlighted and as it can be observed, the question of ethics is associated with that of leadership to a certain degree. It is the leader’s task to enforce an appropriate ethical framework in order to maintain the best possible standards of work (Simmons et al. 2017). For example, when the workers shall have to be motivated about their tasks, it shall also be the responsibility of the leader to encourage them to take an ethical approach towards their work.
