Write a short response to the following questions:

1. How do you assess your ability to perceive aviation risks?

2. Given the “halo effect”—that our perception of our own performance is biased toward being better than it is—How do you know your self-assessment is valid?

3. What did you learn about risk perception by completing the test?

Answers:

1.

Given the test result from the risk perception test my test results are closer to average. My Delayed risk scores are 7.125 closely higher to the average risk score of 6.7. The normal risk pertain to 3.4 which is slightly lower than the average score by 0.2, whereas the Immediate High risk is 7.5 close enough to the average score of 7.8. These score determine my level of competence of being a pilot. The scores closer to the average reveal that I have capabilities that are common to any good pilot. My ability to perceive aviation risk is quite similar to that of a good pilot and is revealed from the test scoees.

2.

With respect to the HALO effect, it can be said that my statement is not biased, rather the test result identify my capabilities of being a capable pilot. Thus it can be inferred that my evaluation is free of the HALO effect (Orasanu & Davison 2017).

3.

From the test it can be understood that risk perception is a cognitive behaviour and necessarily involves all the quality of judgment based on environment and not just technical issues. The risk tolerance of an individual is less when the risk perception is lower. The test concludes that low risk perception can lead to higher engagement of risk, thereby making the aviator and the aircraft vulnerable (Hunter, 2002). Risk perception therefore should be on an average scale keeping in mind the surrounding of the pilot.
