Answer:

Introduction:

Much of the research on sports has highlighted the differences in treatment to indigenous people compared to regular sports persons. Indigenous people refer to all individuals that are the part of aboriginal. In the Australian sports sector, indigenous people have significant presence. In addition, the participation rate for indigenous people in Australian sports sector have increased for sustainable period of time. Still, I have assessed that people perception regarding the acceptance of indigenous people in sports or any sector is not at the desired level. As a result, indigenous people have to face more problems in order to achieve success in the sports field. For that reason, I have selected “AFL Eddie Betts banana-throwing incident 'heartbreaking', Indigenous leader says” published by ABC news. The article highlighted a recent incident of banana throwing at indigenous AFL star Eddie Betts (abc.net 2017). The article illustrates the fact that acceptance level of indigenous people in different parts of Australia is not at the desired level.

Therefore, I will try to highlight the kind of challenges Australian leaders will have to face in order to provide proper supporting environments for all the people associated with the sports sector. In this study, I will try to highlight the importance leadership and manager in providing suitable environment for indigenous people in sports sector. I will also try to highlight the kind of skills leaders in sports sector need to have for providing required level of support to the indigenous people.

Challenges for a global manager:

The selected article has highlighted the way supporters of AFL has ill-treated one of the star players Eddie Betts. Therefore, I feel it highlighted the negative way people perceive about the indigenous people in sports. Thus, changing perception of the people towards indigenous sports persons is the biggest challenges for the global manager. As per the article by Nelson et al. (2012), aboriginal communities depends on developing trust, relationship and connections for creating separate space for themselves. Therefore, I feel it represents huge challenges for sports leaders to develop strategies for constructing strong bonding among the people all across the globe. In Australia, indigenous people represent around 2.5% of the total population. As a result, I feel majority of the Australian people receives very limited opportunity to interact with indigenous people, which eventually affects the way people perceives about the indigenous people. Moreover, I feel the differences in skin colour induce few people to develop negative perception about the indigenous community. Therefore, I belief it will also create major challenges for global managers for avoiding such unnecessary situations in an effective way. As illustrated by Hopkins et al. (2012) differences in age, density, migration, aboriginals and languages can also create challenges for the sports managers to perform all the activities in an effective way. All these factors create barriers for the local people to mix with the indigenous community. As a result, it creates negative impression within the mind of non-indigenous people, which eventually develops this type of unnecessary situation in sports field. It has been identified around 30% of the indigenous people aged around 15 years and participated in different types of sports activities. I belief it has increased the rate of indigenous participation in the different sports activities in a major way. As a result, sports leaders will have to face challenges in handling larger number of potential players for avoiding any challenges.

Moreover, I have assessed that indigenous people has highest rate of participation on different physical activities. Over the years, many people have entered in Australia, which has increased the number of indigenous population. In the present time, many indigenous people are playing in different popular sports league successfully. Australia also has included indigenous sports persons based on the skills level. The focus character in the selected article, Eddie Betts also had a very successful season for Adelaide Football Club. I have also identified different other examples in both Australia and other sporting countries, where indigenous people has developed their career successfully. Moreover, I have assessed that successful inclusion of foreign indigenous players have helped AFL to raise the standard of the league. I have assessed that the popularity of AFL league also started to increase outside of the country as well. For that reason, I feel that global managers will have to focus on identifying all the challenges related to inclusion of indigenous people in different sports for avoiding this type of ‘banana incidents’ in future.

Areas where manager needs to develop good understanding:

The above mentioned challenges has highlighted the fact that mangers need to focus on developing proper understanding of the challenges. For that reason, I feel that managers need to focus on identifying the areas for avoiding such type of challenges related to indigenous community. Firstly, I believe the managers will have to focus on the cultural differences areas between indigenous and non-indigenous people. Therefore, the managers will have to identify the exact factors that are creating cultural differences among the people. As per the article by Mendham et al. (2015), development of culture heavily depends on lifestyle, beliefs, attitude and perception of the people. Therefore, the managers will have to assess all these factors in a significant manner for avoiding abusive issues in the sports sector. Moreover, the managers will also have to focus on gathering information about the number of immigrants Australian government are including every year. Therefore, I feel it will provide an idea to the managers regarding the way participations of indigenous people in sports sector will increase in near future. I also feel managers’ needs to focus on understanding the significance of gender diversity within the indigenous community. It will help to sports managers to create effective training and development programs for all the indigenous players in an appropriate way. I also feel that sports managers need to focus on assessing the dimension of the indigenous communities in an in-depth manner. I believe it will allow sports managers to take necessary actions for developing proper supports and infrastructure in order to develop high quality indigenous talents.

In addition, I believe sports managers will have to focus on understanding the importance of providing similar support and facilities to both In addition, I believe sports managers will have to focus on understanding and non-indigenous players so that they can able to grow in the professional career in an effective way. I have investigated that appropriate inclusion of indigenous people in different sports activities provides more alternative options for the teams to select best talents. Hence, it is likely to increase the overall standard of different sporting events in Australia (Stoneham et al. 2014). In addition, I believe sports managers will have to focus on understanding indigenous players from different parts of world for adding value to the outcome of the sporting events. In addition, I believe sports managers will have to focus on understanding that indigenous players have earned name and fame from the leagues. Therefore, I believe it is necessary for the sports manager to understand and recognize contribution of indigenous players in sporting field. From the selected article, I have also assessed that sports leaders need to evaluate different prior unnecessary situations in sporting fields. I assume that proper understanding of prior challenges for the sports managers will allow making specific an effective strategies in sporting events. I have assessed that sporting sector of the entire globe has made conscious effort in fight against racism and abusive issues for the black and indigenous people. Therefore, I feel sporting managers will also have to gain in-depth knowledge regarding the legislative rules and regulations developed by different sporting authorities for taking strict actions against the rule breakers.

Required global management skill:

After the understanding of different challenges, managers will have to develop various effective strategies for avoiding any unnecessary challenges. Therefore, I feel that the sports managers need to have extremely effective communicational skills so that it can able to share information to all the people. The communicational skills of the manager need to provide information as per the culture and beliefs of the listeners so that it can able to create maximum impact. Moreover, the sports leaders will also need to develop different language proficiency for communicating with both non-indigenous and indigenous people from across the globe. According to Boyle et al. (2012) language barriers is among the prime factors that create barriers among the people, which eventually lead to different unnecessary challenges. For that reason, I feel that sports managers need to develop multiple language skills for creating positive sports environment in country. I feel that appropriate use of communication along with different languages can help sports managers to increase the cohesion between the indigenous and non- indigenous people. I believe increasing cohesion among the people will induce supporters to avoid such type of unnecessary actions. I also feel sports managers need to have effective delegation skills for educating non-indigenous people regarding the importance of including indigenous talents for the betterment of sporting events. I feel that proper delegation skills of sporting managers will help to represents AFL and other Australian sporting events to emerge as the one of the most popular events in world.

On the other hand, sports managers will also have to acquire skills of evaluating present lifestyle of the indigenous players. I believe proper evaluation will help sports managers to develop effective strategies for enhancing the lifestyle of the indigenous players. The selected article has mentioned that Adelaide Football Club has taken necessary strong actions against the Port fan who have thrown banana at Eddie Betts. From that, I feel that sporting leaders also need to have effective immediate decision-making skills for reducing the further adverse impact in an effective way. I feel sporting managers often have to take different strong actions for making changes in structure, process and perception. Hence, strong decision-making skills will allow the leaders to take some strong decisions for protecting indigenous players in an appropriate way (Lahn 2012). Taking responsibility is another key skill of sports leaders that helps to conduct different major sporting events without any major complexities. It has been assessed that skills of taking responsibilities will allow sporting managers to identify and resolve different grass root problems related to indigenous participation in sports. Hence, I feel it will help the leaders to create healthy sporting environment for both indigenous and non-indigenous people in Australia. I feel sport managers also need to have the skills of assessing different beliefs and values of the people for both indigenous and non-indigenous communities. As a result, it will help managers to channel decisions in such way so that it can able to create maximum impact on the sporting felids. Finally, leaders in sports need to provide required level of opportunities to other administrative members of the departments for gathering feedback effectively. I feel appropriate collection of feedback will allow the managers to counter different types of unnecessary situation in sporting fields.

Ethical implication:

Ethics refers to the rules of conduct that describes and reinforces significant culture and social values of a community. Now, maintenance of ethics in sporting fields is essential for keeping healthy and positive image in front of other economies. I feel that appropriate utilization of sports ethics will eliminate any possibility of ‘banana incidents’ in near future. I feel ethical guidelines need to utilize in such a way so that it can able to provide equal opportunity and respect for both indigenous and non-indigenous people. Therefore, management will also have to assess the expected participation rate for both indigenous and non-indigenous people in order to provide proper infrastructure for developing talents (Rossi, Steven and Alison 2013). I feel providing equal opportunities will encourage other indigenous people to take part in different sporting activities. As a result, it will help to create healthy sporting environment in the country, which eventually help Australia to emerge as one of the most popular sporting nation across the country. Moreover, I feel sports managers will have to focus on developing ethical committee for reviewing the current structure and provided facilities in an effective way. As a result, it will allow sporting sector to increase the efficiency level in an effective way. Moreover, I feel ethical committee will have to focus on developing different awareness campaign for the non-indigenous people so that they can able to recognize the importance of including players regardless of religion, culture, values and beliefs. In the awareness campaign, ethical committee will have to provide all the necessary information regarding he kind of adverse impact unethical practices like ‘banana throwing’ will have on the overall sporting image of the country. On the contrary, I believe appropriate ethical practices will help to cover all the areas related to the unnecessary situation in an effective way. I feel ethical activities will also have to include capturing feedback regarding the kind of challenges non-indigenous players are facing at the recent time. Specifically, I feel information will have to be collected regarding the people’s approach and perception towards indigenous players.

As per the article by Hallinan, and Barry (2012) ethical approach will have to focus on evaluating entire activities related to the sporting sector in an effective manner. Therefore, I believe ethical implication will have to focus on assessing the individual behaviours at different situations. I feel it will also have to evaluate the customs and protocols in such a way so that it can induce all the stakeholders related with the indigenous sports to perform all the responsibilities in an appropriate manner. Moreover, government of Australia also has developed different rules and regulations for protecting indigenous players in an appropriate manner (Hollinsworth 2013). However, I do believe that banana throwing incident against Adelaide football club players is just an accident, which is very unlikely to happen in near future. Still, ethical implication will have to focus on assessing all the factors that can induce people to conduct any type of unnecessary actions against the law of the sports. It will allow the sports managers to take different types of decision for accomplishing all the goals and objectives in an effective manner.

Conclusion:

The above illustration has highlighted the fact that management will have to focus on developing effective strategies for providing proper support to all indigenous players in order to emerge as one of the biggest sporting nations across the globe. On the other hand, negative perception towards indigenous people will diminish the brand image of a country’s sporting activities. Hence, I feel management will have to play critical role in identifying all the critical factors that can have adverse impact on the overall image of sporting sector. I believe appropriate utilization of strategies will allow AFL and other sporting events to handle all the challenges associated with the increasing participation of indigenous people in sports. However, the management will have to ensure equal facilities and infrastructure for both indigenous and non-indigenous players. Sports management will also have to capture proper feedback from the indigenous players in order to identify the necessary areas for improvement in near future.
