  91 Download     📄   11 Pages / 2501 Words

Sometimes global business can result in significant disasters for the people of the host country. One such disaster occurred at the Germano mine in the Bento Rodriguez region of Brazil. The mine is owned by Samarco Mineração SA, a joint venture between Vale, a Brazilian based multi-national company and BHP Billiton, an Anglo-Australian multi-national company. How these companies responded to communications leading up to and after the disaster raises questions about their ability to act and communicate ethically in an intercultural and intracultural setting.

Kale (2015) suggests that we can appeal to the human spirit to guide us in our ethical intercultural communication.  He suggests four principles for a code of ethical intercultural communication. These principles can also be used as a basis for any interaction, not just communication, as they reflect elements of various ethical theories.

Answer

Introduction

The report is based upon the business ethics. Ethics can also be referred to as the moral philosophy, and the ethics should be followed in each and every business. Ethics is a branch of philosophy which consists of defending, recommending as well as systemizing of the concept of wrong and rights conduct. The particular term ethics is derived from an ancient Greek word. The report covers the ethical theories and its impact in inter and intra-cultural organisational context. The report also consists of some solutions to the ethical issues which arises during a business operation. Global business sometimes may result into significant disasters for the people of the host country. In this report, solutions are provided for the joint venture company Samarco Mineração SA. It is an Anglo-Australian multinational corporation. The business has faced many ethical issues due to a communication gap between a range of different cultural workers and employees. Ethical theories such as Socrates theory, Plato theory, Aristotle theory as well as Hellenistic Period theory impacts inter and intra-cultural organisational context. The Anglo-Australian multinational company will be helpful if the organisation can apply these traditional ethical theories in their workplace.

Ethical theories in Western moral philosophy

Here, the ethical theories discussed here are based on the Western ethics or Western moral philosophy. Some of the Western ethical theories are described below:

Socrates theory

In Socrates philosophy, knowledge is the fundamental core and experience will help the employees of an Anglo-Australian multinational company to live correctly and live a real life in the workplace (Melden, 2013). Socrates is remarkable for his methodology for continuous attention to which has come to be known as the Socratic strategy. It is in this procedure that most by far of the early Platonic talked are coordinated. Routinely, Socrates begins by requesting a professional from a subject. The professional must be a Socratics. Besides that, the unassailable will is key to this equanimity. Also, the will of the individual should be independent and in place (Mendonca, & Kanungo, 2007). Giving authority to a man to infuriate the mental adjust is, for the most part, offering yourself in subjugation. Moreover, opportunity from material attachments is imperative. If a person is permitted to shock you deliberately, you have no control over your inside world, and in this way no open door. In the case of a thing breaks, the individual should not be irritated, yet rather recognise it was a thing that could break.

Plato theory

Plato theory is concerned with the justice and justice is harmony between three different things such as emotion, reason and appetitive (Singleton, 2004). These three things are the parts of an individual soul. Plato describes the colossal life and how the extraordinary life is best proficient. Like Socrates, he acknowledges there are target moral truths that apply to everyone. The perspective is in opposition to the moral relativism of the Sophists. In the long run, Plato fights that value is a kind of concordance between the three remarkable parts of the liberal society which, identity with the individual's parts of the soul (Brännmark, 2009). Right, when a man achieves concordance between these parts Plato assumes they will act authentically in the conventional sense. Regardless, he moreover keeps up that they will remember their best advantages in light of the way that the intelligent individual is happier than the unreasonable person (Shafer-Landau, 2001).

Aristotle theory

According to Aristotle theory, the purpose of human life is Eudaimonia. It means people want happiness and it can be accomplished by following the ethics to become happy. Aristotle's essential work on morals is the book titled Nicomachean Ethics (Bryan, 2009). Aristotle like the Greek brains before him thinks Eudaimonia as human flourishing or happiness and it should be the central goal of life. Moreover, he thinks like Socrates and Plato, and later a segment of the Hellenistic schools, which to achieve Eudaimonia one must be upright, or moral. Aristotle fights that human life goes for happiness, and has two clarifications behind saying this. The first is based on that joy, and it is added up which infers that happiness is reliably the best choice and that we choose happiness for itself and not for another goal towards which happiness will lead (Smith, 2016). Suppose taking an example of money. People can have money if they can. Regardless, the individual will choose money, not for money, yet rather for the things that money can buy, in this way money does not unequivocally add up to.

Socrates theory, Aristotle theory and Plato theory impact on inter and intra-cultural business environment of the Anglo-Australian multinational company. These three theories are concerned with the knowledge, harmony, justice and happiness of humans (Lombardini, 2013). Bento Rodriguez Dam Disaster is the cause of faults in the intercultural and intracultural setting of the joint venture organisation. The employees and workers working in that Anglo-Australian multinational company have to follow the business ethics. During performing a marketing mix, the employees needs to follow the paths of these traditional theories. The workers should have enough knowledge to carry out a marketing mix. The employees need to be happy to carry out the promotional process for the business.

Resolving a range of real-life ethical dilemmas

Bento Rodriguez Dam Disaster occurred due to some ethical dilemmas in the Anglo-Australian multinational company. Ethical dilemmas are common in the workplace. Based on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, dilemmas are the problems and the situations where and the individual has to make a difficult choice ("Ethics", 2001). Moreover, the ethical dilemma is a problem where a person has to select between immoral and moral act. The disaster occurred due to the confusion between choosing moral and immoral act. Ethical dilemmas occur due to the pressure from the management. These ethical dilemmas can be troublesome for workers to think about, especially if they don't realise what the are the legal guidelines of the company (Garity, 2008). In this manner, it is to the greatest advantage of the Anglo-Australian multinational corporation to give ethical preparing to its employees, to help them recognise unethical conduct and give them tools with which to go along. The Anglo-Australian multinational company should have an ethical approach that spells out its penalties for infractions. Also, the administration must show others how it's done, be demonstrating that the company takes ethics seriously and that violators will be punished by the policies of the company, including possible termination and suspension. These ethical dilemmas can be solved by following some steps which are described below:

  • Knowing the principles: the Anglo-Australian multinational company must follow three ethical principles while making a moral decision. These three ethical principles are intuitionism, utilitarianism as well as moral idealism. Based on these principles, the organisation can assume that the human resource manager is competent enough to fathom the significance of the situation and act accordingly(Wilson, 2011). According to the principle of moral idealism, there is a clear distinction between bad and good and between an acceptable and non-acceptable situation. Therefore, the organisation must abide by the rule of law without any expectations.
  • Discuss Moral Choices: It is very significant for the Anglo-Australian multinational company to consider moral decisions before making a decision regarding a project. The joint ventured organisation should not make rapid decisions. It is always recommended for the company to make hypothetical situations and develop case studies. After that, the management team can engage others to improve the decision-making process by including the moral ethics(Wilson, 2011). Consequently, the company can jot down the adverse effects along with benefits of performing a particular project. They can also reduce the harmful effects by applying strategic decisions.
  • Following a balance sheet approach: A balance sheet approach helps the manager of the company to jot down the cons and pros of the decision they have taken. On the other hand, the assessment approach will help the Anglo-Australian multinational corporation to clarify on the assets and liabilities of the business(Allen, Rosenberg, Keller, Setser, & Roubini, 2002). Moreover, a potential creditor may implement a balance sheet for determining if the firm should be extended credit. Subsequently, it helps the organisations to get a clear picture of things as well as by organising things in a better method.

Reflection

Role of business professionals and its impact of their future actions

The business professionals are the persons who deal with the development of the firm. Moreover, the career of industry professionals regardless of the sector and the discipline focuses primarily on reviewing the emerging markets. These business professionals also have to look after the existing business within a designated area. I as a business professional will get myself engage in developing the business for the company (Sarangi, & Vats, 2015). It should be my responsibility to boost up the performance of the firm. I should set objectives in mind about the actions which I will be going to take in the business for the betterment.  Therefore, for maximising the profitability of the company, I should foster relationships with the potential players as well as the key decision-makers in the market. Apart from these, it is my responsibility must keep up a beguiling state of mind because I will go about as a contact between people from changed establishments (Donaldson, 2000). Business development professionals need to work with brand, media, and sales people to meet organisation goals and satisfy each customer. The key responsibility of a business development specialist or professional is essential to portray and support focus business development practices inside picked parts.

The organisation looks to the expert or professional to create and realise frameworks for development. According to me, the specialist or professional needs to setup monetarily keen yet imaginative choices for boosting bargains. The business development capable in like manner needs to adjust costs according to spending gets ready for each division (Frino, & Desiderio, 2013). The specialist or professional should in like manner hone his or her time-organization capacities to perfection with a particular real objective to be prepared for multitasking, a skill that is key to accomplishment. Besides that, extraordinary communication aptitudes, both verbal and formed, the excellent course of action capacities, grandstand assessment strategies and bits of learning, and conviction while speaking with clients, suppliers or brief specialists should be the role of business professionals. Finally, to ascend as a victor in business development, professionals must be dedicated, lively, and found out about their jobs (Huie, 2016). Longing business development professionals should consider every potential client as a test that will help their employments.

Conclusion

The report concludes that it is significant for every business firms to follow the workplace ethics for the improvement of the enterprise and competence. Besides that, it is recommended to follow the western ethics for better results. The organisation must keep in mind that the ethics are the building blocks of the society. Therefore, it should be the building blocks of the business firm. According to Kravis, if any person or an organisation build the foundation then both the ethical and moral foundation along with the company infrastructure would not crumble. The entire infrastructure should be free of risk. On the other hand, the organisation who cannot follow business ethics falls down quickly. Business ethics are important for long-term survival of the firm. Moreover, the implementation of ethical policies in business helps the company to make quick decisions regarding any project or venture.
