Part 1.

Mariah Carey and Nirvana were both extraordinarily popular during the same time period both on radio and through sales of their music. Listening to the music, in what ways do or don’t they inhabit the same musical world?

Part 2.

Spend at least an hour listening to a modern pop or rock radio station (not oldies or “classic rock,” but entirely rock and pop that is out there now). Report your findings of what is going on in the current day and put that in the context of this week’s lecture and the vast array of music we have studied this semester.

Part 3.

None of the assigned listening tracks from this week's unit on the 21st century (Toby Keith, the Dixie Chicks, Radiohead, and David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj) would be categorized as rock, even by the artists or their record labels. What elements of rock do you hear present in these songs?

Answer:

Mariah Carey vs. Nirvana

Mariah Carey and the Nirvana band were famous artists in the 1990s and had a broad fan base across the globe. Even though the two were prominent at the same time, the type of music produced by them differed. The first significant difference is Nirvana is a rock band while Mariah is an RNB artist. Nirvana’s music of the 1990s was characterized by string instruments emphatically the electric guitar and heavy usage of kettle drums. For instance in the song “smells like the spirit”, an electric guitar is played at the very beginning of the song then closely followed by the drum (Smells Like Teen Spirit, 1999). Mariah’s music, on the other hand, employed the use of the keyboard and few elements of bass beats probably from a beatbox (Carey, 1990). Additionally, there is a difference in the tempo of the different music. Nirvana’s music is fast with the drum maintaining the tempo while Mariah’s songs are slow and clear. Also, Mariah Carey’s songs are majorly love related as seen in her song “Love takes time” while Nirvana’s music is dance-like and can be used in clubs and “smells like the spirit” is a perfect example.

Modern Pop and Rock

The contemporary pop and rock music is quite different from that of the 1990s. One, the current pop music has a clear distinction in terms techniques between the vocals and the instruments used. Lady Gaga is a famous contemporary pop artist and in her song “Bad Romance”, this feature is depicted. At the beginning of the song from 0 sec to 0:08, there as a percussion instrument that almost sounds like a chime that plays at the introductory part (Gaga, 2009). The instrument is then closely followed by Lady Gaga’s voice that hums and sings in alternating sequences. The rock music has also changed significantly. Not all rock songs involve the use of heavy metal drums and a lot of noise. “Not ready to make nice” is a song by a contemporary rock band by the name of Dixie Chicks which attributes to the difference. (Chicks, 2006) The music starts with an acoustic guitar at the introduction before drum beats, and kettle drums join in. An important thing to note is that there are no screams and there are vocal harmonies in the refrain sections.

Elements of Rock in the Tracks

Rock and roll is commonly defined as music of experimentation of the 20th century with the excessive use of metallic instruments and electric guitars and a lot of screams and shouts. Though the exact replica of such music is rare in the 21st century, there is specific music with particular similar elements. For instance, in Radiohead’s song “the pyramid song”, there is the use of kettle drums and percussive instruments similar to that of the 1960s rock music (Everything in Its Right Place, 2001). This is heard from the 2:00 minute of the song. Nicki Minaj and David Guetta’s song “turn me on” employs the first rhythm and dance like style prominent in the rock and roll music (Minaj & Guetta, 2011). This gives the song a slight similarity to rock music.
