Various forms of organizational structure and culture

The organizational structures of the organizations include the tall structure and the flat structure. The tall organizational structure is the one that has many levels of hierarchy. In this kind of an organization, there are a number of managers and each of the managers have control over a small group of people (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). The flat organizational structure has very few levels between the executives and the staffs. The organizational structure has an immense role to play in the organization. The companies that are smaller in size use the flat organizational structure (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). This is because, with smaller number of levels of hierarchy, the employees are able to develop their skills and incorporate innovation. However, in the big organizations, the tall organizational structures are used (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). The culture that is followed in an organization depends on the organizational structure. The various types of cultures include the normative culture, the pragmatic culture and the academic (Brewster et al. 2016). In the normative culture the organizational norms and procedures are predefined and are strictly followed by the employees. In this type of the organizational culture, the employees cannot move out of the pre-defined rules and regulations. In the pragmatic culture, emphasis lies on the clients and achievement of customer satisfaction (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). The organizational culture plays a key role, in determining the success of the organization and achievement of the employee satisfaction (Armstrong and Taylor 2014).  

Role of HR department in an organization

The role of HR department in the organization is very essential. The HR department determines the wages for the skilled exhibited by the employees (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). Moreover, the HR department also determines the leave policies of the employees (Sparrow et al. 2016). Hence, they have a critical role to play. The main roles of HR in the organization are as follows:

  1. Recruitment: One of the essential roles that the HR plays in an organization is the recruitment of the personnel. This is an important activity since the employees and the necessary skills need to be chosen, for the development of the organization (Budhwar and Debrah 2013). Choosing the wrong people, with the unnecessary skills, might prove to be detrimental for the organization (Brewster et al. 2016).  
  2. Safety: The safety and security of the employees need to be ensured by the HR department. Reviewing the safety measures of the organizations, results in employee retention and employee satisfaction (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). Insecurity among the employees needs to be mitigated by the HR department (Brewster et al. 2016).
  3. Employee relations: The relations with the employees need to be positive and healthy such that the employees might be able to work diligently, and focus on the achievement of goals (Armstrong and Taylor 2014).
  4. Compensations: The wages and compensation of the employees need to be given according to the skills they posses. The compensation given needs to be right and justified, in order to ensure employee retention (Armstrong and Taylor 2014).
  5. Benefits: The HR department needs to ensure that the employees are given the benefits such as the holidays, flexible working time and the right amount of leaves (Brewster et al. 2016). This would ensure that the employees are retained. Thus, HR department has a significant role to play in the employee retention policy (Riley 2014).
  6. Training and development: The training needs of the employees need to be identified and the training and development of the employees need to be arranged by the HR department (Storey 2014). The necessary training given to the employees has to be taken care by the HR department (Armstrong and Taylor 2014).  

Key activities of the managers and the skills needed

The skills that the manager include the skill of leadership, skill of communication. Moreover, the managers need to have conflict resolution skills, such that conflicts among the employees could be mitigated easily (Renwick, Redman and Maguire 2013). The key skill of the managers includes the leadership skills, the conflict resolution skills, the communication skills, technical relevant skills. It is also essential for the manager to manage the workplace diversity effectively (Wilton 2016). Thus, the key activity of the manager is essential for the prosperity of the organization. The leadership skills are essential since the employees need to be managed and led successfully (Armstrong and Taylor 2014). Moreover, the skill of conflict resolution is important since the conflicts need to be resolved as soon as they occur. The lack of conflict resolution skills would result in conflicts in the organization and among the teams.
