Key Topics

A report is a statement that supports the issue that is being developed. You will need to research the topic and develop a report that explores its major concepts

For the Communication Report you will observe a communication video (which will be available on BB in the “Report” folder under Assessments) and then develop a 1200-word report on that scenario.

Communication report
Refer to the handout “Writing reports” contained in the Assessment Folder. Your report” will consist of a 1200-word report on the communicationscenario.
The video depicts patient – nurse interaction illustrating communication skills and barriers to communication. You will then write a report on this. Your tutorials will cover how to write reports and what you will need to do to complete this.

Communication

Abstract

In this paper, the concept of communication has been discussed. Communication is a process of exchanging information such as ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and values. In order to conduct this study a video "Proper Patient Care- Communication Technique" has been watched. The video has two scenarios. In the first scenario, the barrier of communication has been shown while in the second scenario of the video effective communication between both the nurse and the patient has been shown. Therefore, in this study, the importance of effective communication, as well as barriers to the communication, has been discussed. At the end of the study, recommendations have been provided to ensure effective communication between the nurses and the patients.

Introduction

As it can be seen in the video “Proper Patient Care- Communication techniques” how the communication between the nurse and the patient proceeded in both the scenarios. The video shows two scenarios of communication, in the first scenario barriers to effective communication, has been shown while in the second scenario effective communication between the nurse and the patient has been shown (Proper Patient Care-Communication Technique, 2018). Therefore,in this paper, we would highlight the importance of effective communication and the barriers and how to reduce such. Lastly, recommendations for removal of such barriers and promotion of effective communication would be mentioned.

Results

In the video, it has been shown in the second scenario that how the nurse is communicating with the patient effectively. The nurse is showing kindness and courtesy towards the patient in the second scenario and the patient is also replying in the same manner. Hence there is effective communication between the nurse and the patient. The studyrecommended that nurses should go afar simply representing these niceties though. They should reach to each patient and establish effective communication in order to ensure that they are caring about the patients and they are curious to know about the situation of the patients so that effective medical service can be provided to the patients.
Nurses who take the time to recognize the major challenges and concerns of their patients will be better ready to support on their behalf and correctlysolve issues as they rise. Suchlarger focus on interactionnormally leads to better patient results as well.Second, patients who feel like they are receiving attention of the nurses during acommunication are likely to reveal the factualamount of their feelings and indicationsfaster. Patients can also be satisfied with their care if the nurse delivers them with completecare.Third, relationalinteraction can gratify the essentialdemands of the patient as outlined in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Anderson, 2014). Suchdemandscontain the emotions of security, love, and sureness, all of which are significant during the treatment and recovery of the patients.

Discussion

In the first scenario of the video, there is no effective communication between the nurse and the patient. It shows the barriers to the communication. The nurse says that she does not have time or she is very busy. The patient also shows discomfort and stress which are making their communication ineffective. So, on the basis of the first scenario of the video, the following are found as the barriers of the effective communication (Davis, 2016).

Time – or lack of it – develops animportant barrier to communication for nurses (Norouzinia, 2016). Hurried communication is never as effective as a leisurely interaction, yet in pressured workplaces, nurses faced with competing demands may neglect the quality of communication. At the same time, nurses have to deal with several patients; it reduces the availability of the time to listen to a patient. The nurses allocate little or less time per patients which reduces the effectiveness of the communication. Hence, it is also one of the major barriers to the effective communication. If the communication between the nurses and the patients is time-consuming the nurses cannot pay enough attention to the other patients and hence affect the effectiveness of the communication (Baker, 2015). The patients who are in great pain need immediate attention of the nurses. If the nurses do not pay enough attention to such patients, they will be frustrated, and hence the communication between both the parties will be affected significantly (Mullins, 2016).
One of the major barriers to the effective communication in the healthcare setting is the discomfort of the patients. In the first scenario of the video, it can be seen that the level of stress, discomfort, and anger of the patient is very high which is making their communication ineffective (Hyams, 2018). If the patients are in discomfort due to the pain, stress, depression, etc. they would not listen to the nurses properly and hence a barrier would be created in the communication. It will reduce the effectiveness of the communication between the nurses and the patients.

The attitude of some the nurses as shown in the first scenario of the video is also a barrier to the effective communication. Some of the nurses do not cope with the demand for services by the patients and hence become frustrated and start ignoring the queries of the patients. The patients also do not want to talk to such nurses. This affects the communication between the nurses and the patients.

Conclusion

Healthcare setting needs effective communication between nurses and patients in order to provide effective medical services to the patients. As it shows in the first scenario of the video, if the nurses would not give adequate time to the patients and they say that they do not have enough time, it will negatively impact the communication. On the other hand, if nurses would listen to the patients carefully and give enough time to the patient as well as show courtesy and affection towards the patients, it will enhance the effectiveness of the communication. Therefore, the nurses should follow the guidelines of effective communication in order to make the communication effective.

Recommendations

The following are the recommendations based on the video “Proper Patient Care- Communication Techniques” to ensure effective communication in the healthcare setting. Some of the recommendations are based on research for effective communication in the organization.

•    The nurses should have effective communication skills because the lack of communication skills is the major barrier to effective communication. Effective communication skills make the nurses capable of determining when, how, and what to talk to the patients (Ngwenya, 2016). Effective communication skills also make the nurses capable of dealing with such patients who are difficult to handle. Effective communication skills also teach the nurses to listen the patient actively and even if the situation is bad or patients are showing anger the nurses need to keep calm.

•    The nurses should show kindness and courtesy to the patients in order to ensure effective communication. As in the second scenario of the video, the nurse is showing kindness and courtesy towards the patient and the patient is also replying the nurse in the same manner. It shows that if the nurses show kindness and courtesy towards the patients, the patients will also support the communication to make it effective.

•    The nurses should pay full attention towards the patients. As in the first scenario of the video the nurse is saying that she is very busy, the level of stress of the patient increases. The patient is showing discomfort while the nurse is saying she is busy instead of solving the issues of the patient (Jackson, 2016). It would lead to the ineffective communication. Therefore, the nurses should consider the issues of patients and try to solve that in priority.
