Case : Counseling and Sexual Orientation

You are the best (more knowledgeable and experienced) psychologist”counselor in a relatively small town. You also happen to be a hard core fundamentalist Christian who is horrified by the prevalence of homosexual behaviors and gay culture. One day, a gay client, referred to you by a colleague of yours who had been unsuccessful treating this client, knocks at your door for your services. Due to your long practice experience, you realize that, if you were to accept this person as a client, you will be subjected to listening to him talking, in a detailed manner, about his/her gay/lesbian practices, behaviors and commitment to the promotion of the gay/lesbian cause. This prospect triggers off a moral dilemma for you. Now, should you accept this person as your client or not?

If you turn him/her down, account in an ethical way, for your refusal, bearing in mind that you're really the only good and effective psychologist in this town which is 30 miles away from the closest city where alternatives to your services are available.

If you decide to receive him/her as your client, how would you deal with him/her. But first, explain your decision. Second, what will you be guided by in whichever course of action you choose?

Instructions

1. Use the AJ Method in this case.

2. Argue, in an essay format, your way to moral-decision making in light of the above-mentioned method (AJ).

Answer:

Case study

It is a matter of great pride for me that I am the best psychologist and a counselor in my town. To be able to access a psychologist cum counselor who has expertise and experience like me, one needs to travel 30 miles from the town. So, I am very respectable by people in the town. I get invitations to join as the chief guest for almost every humanitarian and social work related events that take place within the town I live. Towns’ people as well as the governmental institutions consider me one of their most valued citizens or to be more precise, the most precious citizen. I also get multiple benefits being the best psychologist available in the entire town.

I am one of the trustees of my towns all 3 schools, one high school and the one and only college. Many people come to meet me when I am available in town. There is a long list of famous people that took sessions from me and many of them are still in contact. It is because they were able to get good results. They even sometimes advice their family and friends to do counseling sessions with me.

This way, in my 28 years of experience in the field of psychology, I met various people and came across with different types of mindsets that they have. How these people judge their neighboring environment, it is a very interesting subject altogether!

From my long client base, one was too quiet and sad about whatever was happening in his life whereas, another lady was overjoyed about the episodes she was experiencing for a certain period of time in her life. One amongst them was very possessive about his clothes whereas another mid-aged man was too reluctant about his family that he lost his 3year old daughter in one Christmas eve. Human mind is full of suspense, what will happen to it no one can surely say but only can predict considering some symptoms. Considering these symptoms, we the psychologists prefer one way of living as well as medicine. This is what I am doing almost for two decades.

I am also a follower of Christian fundamentalism. Although I am bought up in a communist family (my father was one of the famous cardiologists of his time), from the very beginning of my life, I was leaned towards Christ and stories of miracles that he did and what sufferings he had to face. I believe in the Bible as it is inspired by God’s Word.

Maybe I am considered as a racist by the critics but I do not prefer wasting time on listening to what they have to say about me; I only believe in God and I follow the path he has showed and principals he has asked his followers to maintain.

On a fine day, one person of mid 30’s came to my chamber. He was referred by one of my colleague, Samuel Henderson who was unable to treat this client. To be very straight, I did not like his appearance. The way he started talking to me, way he was looking at me also his gestures annoyed me. I was in dilemma that whether I should take this client. I being a strict believer and follower of Christ, interacting with people who belong from homosexual group is a sin, but as a psychologist, it is my duty to help anyone who has come to me with expectations. I was into confusion and asked that client to contact me after a week as I had no other option other than self-analyze.

I went in to deep thinking about it. It was a very difficult situation for me. I am not supposed to listen to anything related to homosexuality and the activities of that particular client so I first concluded to cancel any further meeting. Then I thought the person has come with an expectation that being the best psychologist cum counselor in town, I am the best person to look at for his proper treatment. This is also my profession, and this client has come from a very close connection. Therefore, I should not refuse him as in our profession other than direct appointment; clients reach out to us through close connections as well. Considering all the situations, I kept my fundamentalist belief behind and opted to aid this person. Yes, I did not send his to a comparable facility far distant from the town.

AJ method

The AJ method deals with the ethical analyzing, reasoning and justification iof any particular issue. The initial four stages in the AJ Technique are "nonpartisan" ones, including a watchful examination of the issue with which all gatherings ought to concur; just the last stride includes standing firm on the issue, and that progression requires clarifying and legitimizing (to oneself. In the above case, the information about the counselee was gathered accordingly and was figured out for the decision making procedure about   for planning out the creativity of the thinking procedure, need to list out the positive and the negative consequences of the ethical considerations (Dewey). Lastly, the main purpose of this type of method can be used for the counseling procedure in this type of case. Justification also plays an important role in this.

According to the case, I had to keep my Christianity fundamentalism behind just to help this man, and guide him in the proper direction. However our religion does not support homo-sexual marriages. AJ method helps in solving any sort of critical reasoning or ethical issues very easily. It always requires the moral strategy that can be rejected reasonably on the ground of the moral reasoning. It deals with the reflection of ethics with a little good luck and ends in a very creativity manner by recognizing for the consistency with the principles that focuses with the principles of ethics and the troubles faced by the ethics (Noddings).

Role of ethics

Ethics can be differentiated into several divisions. Utilitarianism holds that the measure of satisfaction and enduring made by a man's activities is the thing that truly matters (Peters). Consequently, acting appropriately includes augmenting the measure of satisfaction and limiting the measure of misery around you. The case of Kantians ethical theory focuses with the stresses, standards behind activities instead of an activity's outcomes (Ward).  Acting appropriately in this manner requires being inspired by legitimate general rule that approach everybody with deference (Hursthouse). The theory of contract proposes considering morals as far as understandings between individuals. Making the best decision implies complying with the understandings that the individuals from a balanced society would pick (VanHooft). Virtue ethical theory centers moral consideration on connections before different variables. Subsequently, acting properly includes building, reinforcing, and keeping up solid connections. Acting appropriately along these lines shows tend to others and for the connections of which they are a section. To care ethicists, connections are crucial to moral considering (Swets).

This case deals and focuses with the Virtue ethics which throws the light on the considerations based on the moral dilemma. I, being Christian fundamentalism, the belief and the instruction by the religion never support the homosexuality but only to keep my virtue ethics I had to help this homosexual man for his further future.
