Sampling Plan
The chief aim of the research was to model a complex phase of various intervention designs with a primary aim of exploring the various experiences of adults suffering from T2DM (ty
pe 2 diabetes mellitus). The fore mentioned was achieved by involving the patients in a Guided Self-determination (GSD) programme (Barnard & Llod, 2012) that was led by nurses from different general practice. Described below is the sampling plan that was used to collect data which was later analysed to portray the results obtained.
To begin with, four nurses emanating from different general practices and with relevant experience on diabetes care undertook a practical and theoretical training programme. It is the nurses who invited sixteen patients, four patients each. Each of the patients had to meet the following conditions for them to be selected; be diagnosed with T2DM, be of 18 years of age or more, have been suffering from the disease for three months or more and be in a capacity to communicate in Norwegian. Eight of the patients had gone through the original GSD programme version. The other eight had been through an adjusted version of the programme. After the programme, 9 of the patients were interviewed after they consented for the same with four of them having participated in the original version. Ages of the 9 were between 36 and 67 years and had suffered from T2DM for a range of 2-15 years.
This sampling plan provided reliable data and thus no other better plan would have been implemented. However, in a bid to increase cultural applicability, the model should invite patients from a variety of cultural backgrounds (Engel & Schutt, 2014) found in the country and not only those able to communicate in Norwegian.
