Woonona fitness instructor Catrin Ellice De Jonge escapes conviction over Lorna Jane active wear theft Shannon Tonkin.

Catrin De Jonge admitted stealing $2,100 worth of Lorna Jane clothing while working as a casual sales assistant.

A Woonona woman has avoided a criminal conviction after admitting fleecing thousands of dollars worth of clothing from up-market active wear retailer Lorna Jane while employed as a casual sales assistant.

Catrin Ellice De Jonge, 21, had been working part-time as a stylist for the popular brand for three years when a fashion-forward decision brought her deception to light.

Police documents tendered to Wollongong Local Court this week said De Jonge was seen wearing one of the brand's 'carve swim active' bras when she arrived at the Wollongong Central store for a shift on July 23.

The attire raised the suspicion of her colleagues, as the clothing line had only just been released in stores.

An audit of the retailer's sales database confirmed De Jonge had not purchased the item from any store.

A week later De Jonge was called into a meeting with Lorna Jane's loss prevention officer and the NSW area manager, where she promptly confessed to having stolen the bra while working at the Macarthur Square outlet.

Asked if she'd taken other items during her time with the retailer, De Jonge confirmed she had swiped several other pieces of clothing.

Three days later, on August, 2, De Jonge attended the Lorna Jane store in Wollongong, bringing 24 with her including still-tagged sports bras, tights, tank tops and shirts.

The total value of the stolen goods was $2,100

De Jonge was charged with theft as an employee and made full admission during an interview with police.

In court this week, defence lawyer Neill McCarthy said both he and De Jonge had attempted to contact Lorna Jane to repay the money however they'd been rebuffed.

"I made quite extensive efforts to speak to them but they told me not to contact them," he said.

He told the court De Jonge was no longer working for the brand but still had employment as a fitness instructor at two local gyms.

In sparing De Jonge a conviction, Magistrate Peter Thompson noted the size of the case against her was largely due to her own admissions, however said her actions could not be tolerated.

"It shows a significant breach of trust this is something that will no doubt follow you [for life]," he said. De Jonge was placed on a nine-month community release order.

  • Briefly identify the management issue (what is the management problem?)
  • What management theory, could help solve the management issue? (briefly say "how can the management theory solve the issue?")

Answer

Management is the action of people working together so as to accomplish a specific motive using the available basic resources. It can also be defined as the process by which one facilitates the performance of an organization so as to maximize its profit motive (His
lop, Bosua and Helms, 2018, p.118).

In the article of Lorna Jane clothing, it is clearly seen that the company did not employ specialize employees. De Jonge being one of the employees, is said to have stolen from the company. This shows that she can never be trusted to work in any company. Stealing is one factor that any employee of a company should not have. She is termed to have “swiped several other pieces “this shows that she has been stealing for quite some time.

According to management rules the employees should only work according to the rules and regulations of the company (Greene and Kirton, 2015, n.p). Realizing that De Jonge has been stealing shows that the employers have not been keen of the activities taking place in the company. To avoid more of such in the company they can build CCTV cameras to monitor every activity in the company. The top managers before employing somebody they should make sure that the person as a good working experience to avoid more fraud (Hislop, Bosua, and Helms, 2018, p.59).

As from the text, we can see that there was poor communication between the employees and the employer (Welch, 2012, p.247). It is quoted “I made quite extensive efforts to speak to them but they told me not to contact them,” This gives evidence that the communication level in the company was poor. This gives one reason as to why the managers did not realize that some clothing was missing but only realized it when she had already swiped several pieces.

Communication is so essential in any given company. It is always healthy for the managers to relate well with their employees so as to identify any problem that they face. A good communication should be expressed using non ambiguous terms. In the case of Lorna Jane clothing, their managers did not really have good communication skills with their employees.
