Answer:

Verbal Communication

As far as the verbal communication skills are concerned, I would like to designate myself as an assertive speaker. I try to interact in a manner that is expressive and explanatory of my own perceptions and thoughts. I make sure that no one gets hurt because of my words and indulge in an effective style of communication. I feel the persons with whom I interact rely on me because of this trait in my personal communicative style. They feel safe to confide their feelings and thoughts without any hesitation. Certain factors guide me through the path of workplace communication behavior that encompasses relational maintenance, expression of negative emotion, information exchange and organizing communication behaviors (Keyton et al., 2013). I prefer using personal pronouns while talking to ease out the conversation. I can promptly engage in effective communication with anyone at first encounter only and prefer working in a team structure rather than working solitarily. I easily mingle with people in order to get better acquainted (Adams, 2014). Generally, I talk in a moderate tone and pitch in a slower manner so that my words are audible and comprehensive to the recipient. I also ensure that my vocabulary are appropriate to relevant situations thereby try to avoid any vagueness or incongruency in communication.

Non-verbal Communication

Attainment of desired competency in communication is dependent upon paraphernalia other than verbal communication skills. This includes the adept utilization of the non-verbal form of interaction to achieve optimum benefits in learning. Hence, knowledge and awareness pertinent to the usage of efficient way of non-verbal communication is required and its integration with the conventional forms of communication yield positive outcomes (Surkamp, 2014). In my daily encounters, I do not use non-verbal means of communication too often. However, I am very finicky about maintaining eye contact with the audience while speaking. Hand gestures come naturally to me while talking when I use forceful hand movements to emphasize on issues that I intend to convey. I firmly believe that chronemics play a crucial role in effective communication as the time of throw of words are vital to account for holistic results that might suffice the purpose. In order to foster a friendly gesture, I try to keep a smile on my face while talking. Contrarily, while listening to others or in course of responding I use the head tilting or head leaning gesture. The prudent and pragmatic application of non-verbal communication has been verified in case of educational setting and the same may be corroborated to other settings as well (Liu, Calvo & lim, 2016).

Culture

The socio-cultural backgrounds and the environment in which one lives affect the inter-personal communication skills in persons to a large extent. Culture directs the behavior of a person in a vivid manner thereby enabling them to emote in a particular way under specific circumstances. In this context, the identity negotiation theory is considered to resolve matters related to socio-cultural affiliation and personal identity matter relevant to interpersonal and intercultural communication settings (Ting?Toomey, 2015). In the pursuit of my professional experience, I seldom use the cultural anecdotes related to my background. Over the years, I have consciously maintained a unique and distinctive style of communication devoid of any cultural influence. Till date I try and continue with that behavior only. Empirical researches have shown that diverse ethnicity and cultural backgrounds leads to distinct communicative strategies in individuals (Soliz, 2016).

Context

The situation that one is predisposed to greatly influences the kind of communication behavior he/she indulges in. Analysis of the environment determines the type of communication that appears in a person. Patterns of contextual communication behaviors are observed in cases of generic context, specific situation and the desired framework (Vl?du?escu, 2014). I am polite by nature and do not get irritated or annoyed easily. However under certain situations, I do get agitated and express anger through heated arguments and angry verbal gesture. Normally, I talk in a soft volume understandable to everyone who are listening my utterances. I take time to listen to others and comprehend their thoughts accordingly. I try not to interrupt anyone midway of their conversation and purposely try and invest in more time in listening rather than commenting abruptly. Moreover, the type of responses that I d give in a situation is entirely dependent upon the reciprocation I receive from them. In case I find that someone is unnecessarily behaving rudely with me, I try and ignore at first, but once I reach the threshold of my patience I tend to lose my composure and give heated remarks in response. My facial expressions reveal that I am angry due to redness and pallor. Similar state occurs when I feel depressed as my gesticulations undergo dramatic reduction while the pallor on my face appears visibly well. Functional perspectives in addition to body movements, facial and visual behavior along with vocal behavior are all intimately related and vary in differential contexts thereby influencing the non-verbal communication behavior (Siegman & Feldstein, 2014).

Strengths

On reviewing the personal communication style and behavior of mine, I think that I have an innate capacity to captivate the audience with my speech. My forte lies in the confidence that I showcase while resorting to oral communication with others. Furthermore, the eye contact strategy works well for me in interacting with my communicators in a rationale way. The hand gestures that I am accustomed to while speaking further boosts up my confidence to better deliver the thoughts that encapsulate my mind. Use of simple and colloquial terms and phrases apart from using personal pronouns make my job to communicate easier. Thus I wish to hone my skills further to contribute more constructively in a communication.

Weaknesses

Like any other person, I have certain shortcomings that impair my communication with others. Amongst these, the inability to take control over my temper in situations of adversity thwarts my behavior. I need to work on this and improve my anger through effective anger management strategy. The situational variation in my behavior also sometimes impede the performance level and this lack of uniformity in maintaining the effective communication strategy challenges the progress of my professional career. Keeping in mind all these drawbacks, I need to surely look after this for the sake of my personal betterment.
