C10214 Construction Project Management : Assessment Answers

Section 1: Overview of roles possible for construction graduates
Construction is a diverse field with many possibilities. Students are to research and discuss some common professions that may be undertaken by a construction graduate. You should provide a brief description of each of the positions you choose and briefly discuss some of their day-to-day duties.

Section 2: Case study of one specific industry role
In this section you will be required to develop a case study of the particular construction profession that interests you the most. The case study should include at least the following information:
1. Job title
2. Responsibilities and outline of what the daily routine could look like
3. Essential skills / qualities
4. Required qualification/certification/membership
5. Pay scales
6. Good and not so good things about the job, and/or challenges
Section 3: Personal reflection on why you wish to pursue a career as the role you identified in Section 2
In this section students are required to write a personal reflection on the particular role you identified .

The purpose is for you to explore why you are interested in this particular role and whether you think it is the right type of job for you. You may use the following suggestions in guiding your reflection:
What interests you about the job?
Why do you think you would be suited to that particular job?
What challenges would you face in the job?
How would it extend and develop you as a professional?

Remember that while this section is a personal reflection, and therefore use of the first person pronoun ‘I’ is acceptable, you are still writing academically for an assessment. Take care that your expression is not too much like casual speech and that you pay attention to spelling as well as sentence and paragraph structure.

Section 1: Overview

Construction, in general, is a process that involves designing, managing, planning and constructing of infrastructure. Construction is, therefore, a broad and diverse field as it comprises of different roles, services and professional disciplines. Moreover, according to Doyle (2016), it contributes to over 9 percent of many developed countries gross economy. Therefore, what are the key professions associated with this broad field?

Below is a brief description of some of these professions.

  1. Quantity Surveyor (QS) – A QS must have a strong and practical application of numerical numbers as well as good financial management skills. In a nutshell, QS are responsible for managing all the costs related to construction. As a QS, routine activities will include; calculations of construction estimates, assessing designs to ensure regulations are met and tracking projects progress as well as variations (Target jobs 2017).
  2. Structural Engineer – A creative profession that uses science and math to develop the structural component of infrastructure. Moreover, structural engineers solve integration problems, especially when developing structures that can withstand environmental and human pressures. Routine activities will include; designing the structural component of infrastructure in collaboration with architects. Two, they choose construction material e.g. concrete and steel and three, they inspect construction work while advising contractors.
  3. Civil Engineer – An overall profession that integrates design, planning, development and constructions. Civil engineers are responsible for huge construction projects which make them the key to the completion and safety of the said projects. In terms of day to day activities, civil engineers will plan, design and supervise construction projects.
  4. Control surveyors – A policy or regulatory profession that ensures building legislations and regulations are maintained. CS roles will cover health, safety (fire), accessibility and many others. Routine activities include; assessment of project designs to ascertain safety and regulations, monitoring construction progress and property alteration (Target jobs 2017).

Section 2: Case study

Job title: Civil Engineer

Responsibilities and Routine activities

As one of the oldest branches of engineering, civil engineering is responsible for planning and conducting construction work based on careful analysis, evaluation and selection of good engineering principles/procedures (New age Publisher 2016). On a daily basis, CEs will measure site surfaces, plan building projects, build infrastructure such as building and even drainages. In addition to this, they will develop system control techniques as well.

Essential Skills

  • Excellent analytical skills combined with an accurate understanding of analysis software.
  • Practical knowledge of CAD such as Auto Cad.
  • Utmost computer skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Also, a master’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent field.
  • Civil Engineering Certification (CEC)
  • Membership in the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • Relevant experience

Pay Scale: On average, most civil engineers will receive an annual salary of about 63,000 USD (Human Capital 2017).

Pros and Cons

As a profession, civil engineering is interesting and according to most student experience offers the best experience as compared to other engineering fields. Moreover, practical examples are available all the time without the need of special practical resources. In addition to this, Civil engineering offers a good balance between community and environmental responsibility, a crucial element in personal growth and development. Finally, like any other engineering profession, civil engineers receive a good salary that is way above the average value. However, as a disadvantage, the profession comes with extreme pressure which is characterised by long working hours and sometimes in extreme conditions. These conditions in most cases are the major challenges faced by civil engineers (Kokemuller 2017).

Section 3: Personal reflection

At a personal level is intrigued by nature and the environment, this interest draws my attention to civil engineering a profession that seems to combine all the elements of science and more so, the environment. In addition to this, civil engineering has a huge role in community development, a concept that aims to better human life and their way of living. Personally, I think I would be well suited for the role because I desire an analytical profession that combines all the elements of nature. Furthermore, I can cope well with pressure which is a necessary skill for the profession.

In terms of challenges, I tend to think the biggest one would be translating designs to feasible results in extreme conditions particularly, in areas that are in tough terrain or have extreme weather conditions. Moreover, the long working hours would be strenuous, to say the least forcing one to adapt to short resting periods. However, with pressure comes resilience which is why I believe the profession would help mould me into a better engineer with the utmost respect for nature. Furthermore, my analytical skills would grow with time because of practice and experience gained in the field.
