Assessment Task 3:

TASK SUMMARY:

For this task you are required to participate in three role-plays with your assessor, playing the part of a counsellor during an initial counselling session with three different clients presenting with different issues.

Please Note: This assessment MUST be completed prior to completing Assessment Task 4.

  • Access to a counselling contract/agreement template or guide.

INSTRUCTIONS:

ROLE PLAY 1:JEFF

You are to read the background information before you go into the counselling session.

Background information:

Jeff is a new client who is aged 15. He is attending counselling as his mother recently passed away.

Jeff’s father arranged for this counselling session with Jeff as he has been struggling to deal with his grief. Today you are going to meet with Jeff for the first time. You will be required to complete the standard process of commencing a new counselling relationship with Jeff.

  • In this role play, you will play the role of the counsellor.
  • Your assessor will play the role of Jeff.
  • You will need to follow the process of an initial counselling interview to establish and confirm the helping relationship.
  • Remember to discuss and document a counselling agreement with Jeff addressing disclosure and other relevant counselling requirements
  • You will need to take notes during the interview to assist in the development of a counselling plan (which you will complete in Assessment Task 4)

Your assessor will be looking to see that you can demonstrate the following:

  • Appropriate communication strategies, including
  • Effective use of body language
  • Paraphrasing
  • Reflecting feelings
  • Appropriate use of open, closed and probing questions
  • Summarising
  • Reframing

Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:

  • Analyse clients existing information prior to the counselling session
  • Explain the counselling process that will occur throughout the session
  • Organise a counselling contract with the client that addresses disclosure
  • Acknowledge and address client’s concerns or anxieties
  • Determine client needs, expectations and commitment to the counselling
  • Follow a structured approach to counselling sessions
  • Use the counselling session to gather additional client information
  • Discuss client’s priorities and agree on a counselling plan with the client

ROLE PLAY 2:SANDRA

You are to read the background information before you go into the counselling session.

Background information:

Sandra is a new client in her mid-30’s. She is single with no children. She has very little in the way of emotional support at home and has come to you as she has been feeling depressed.

Sandra has been receiving counselling elsewhere for the last 2 years but has now transferred to you.

Today you meet Sandra for the first time. During the session, you notice Sandra has some cuts on her arms that look like they could be from self-harming. When she sees you looking at her arms she quickly pulls down her sleeves self-consciously.

  • In this role play, you will play the role of the counsellor.
  • Your assessor will play the role of Sandra.
  • You will need to follow the process of an initial counselling interview to establish and confirm the helping relationship.
  • Remember to discuss and document a counselling agreement with Sandra addressing disclosure and other relevant counselling requirements

Background information:

Georgina is a new client. Who you will be meeting today for the first time. She is aged in her mid-forties and has two young children aged 8 and 10. She currently lives with her husband in an unhappy relationship. She has sought counselling to assist with her unhappiness in her relationship.

Georgina is seeking counselling as she is in a very unhappy relationship and has no one to confide in. She is hoping counselling will help resolve some of her emotional issues.

  • In this role play, you will play the role of the counsellor.
  • Your assessor will play the role of Georgina.
  • You will need to follow the process of an initial counselling interview to establish and confirm the helping relationship.
  • Remember to discuss and document a counselling agreement with Georgina addressing disclosure and other relevant counselling requirements
  • You will need to take notes during the interview to assist in the development of a counselling plan (which you will complete in Assessment Task 4)

For this task, you are required to develop three counselling plans for each of the clients from Task 3. Each plan must be based on the information provided during the client’s initial counselling session. Please Note: This assessment MUST be completed after completing Assessment Task 3.

RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS ASSESSMENT

  • Access to a counselling plan template/guide
  • Additional client information – notes taken from Assessment Task 3
  • Access to a computer (if students prefer to type out their answers).

INSTRUCTIONS:

PART A-JEFF’S COUNSELLING PLAN

1. Read through the notes that you took from your initial counselling session with Jeff (Role Play 1, Assessment Task 3)

2. Develop a counselling plan for Jeff based on the information gathered during the session.

Ensure that you have covered the following information in Jeff’s counselling plan:

  • Recording of Jeff’s identified priorities

  • Involvement of other agencies/referrals, if applicable

3. Have a discussion with your workplace supervisor and write down the legal considerations for keeping records of client’s personal information and counselling plans

PART B-SANDRA’S COUNSELLING PLAN

Read through the notes that you took from your initial counselling session with Sandra (Role Play 2, Assessment Task 3)

Develop a counselling plan for Sandra based on the information gathered during the session.

Ensure that you have covered the following information in Sandra’s counselling plan:

  • Recording of Sandra’s identified priorities
  • Observations of Sandra’s requirements
  • Involvement of other agencies/referrals, if applicable
  • Safety or reporting issues, if applicable
  • Goals
  • Evaluation strategies
  • Special needs information

Write a short summary of your duty of care requirements in relation to your counselling session with Sandra.

PART C-GEORGINA’S COUNSELLING PLAN

Read through the notes that you took from your initial counselling session with Georgina (Role Play 3, Assessment Task 3)

Develop a counselling plan for Georgina based on the information gathered during the session.

Ensure that you have covered the following information in Sandra’s counselling plan:

  • Recording of Georgina’s identified priorities
  • Observations of Georgina’s requirements
  • Involvement of other agencies/referrals, if applicable
  • Safety or reporting issues, if applicable
  • Special needs information
  • Goals
  • Evaluation strategies

Write a short summary of mandatory reporting requirements in relation to your counselling session with Georgina.
