‘Examining cloud computing adoption intention, pricing mechanism, and deployment model International’, Journal of Information Management.

Answer

Cloud Computing in Today's Business Environment

According to their article, Pei-Fang Hsu, Ray & Li-Hsieh defined cloud computing as an emerging technology with the ability of revolutionizing IT service delivery from the traditional way through greater elasticity, ubiquitous access and reduced costs. However, they stated that adoption of this new technology would require firms to first address concerns they faced under the enterprise IT platform. According to them, this would avoid the inheritance of weaknesses in the traditional enterprise IT into the cloud computing because the two have some relationships (Pei-Fang Hsu, Ray & Li-Hsieh, 2014 p.478). They considered cloud computing to be a more effective technology over the traditional enterprise solutions because of its new deployment and pricing strategies. From their research, they arrived at four conclusions: first, they found out that cloud computing technology was still at its initial and its adoption rate was very slow, the adoption of this technology was based on its perceived benefits and business concerns, firms which depicted greater IT capabilities preferred the pay as you go mechanism of pricing and lastly but not least, the deployment model of this technology was highly influenced by the business concern (Kim, 2011 p.230).

Evidently, Pei-Fang Hsu, Ray & Li-Hsieh conclusive remarks were valid. This is in consideration to the fact that despite of cloud computing technology being there for approximately three decades and with its efficiency, cost benefits and competitive advantages, many businesses have continued to operate the old way (Pei-Fang Hsu, Ray & Li-Hsieh, 2014 p.484). A study conducted by the International Data Group indicated that the businesses which have started using cloud technology as well as those which have expressed their interest in cloud computing make a percentage of 69 while those which totally have not implemented and have not expressed their interest in this technology make up 18 percent (Sultan, 2014 p.180).

The current statistics are however very different as businesses are slowly acknowledging the role of cloud computing as a technology with a lot of benefits (Jones, Irani, Sivarajah and Love, 2017 p.15). For instance, its reduction in business capital investment and minimal running costs has attracted many businesses to adopt it. From this perspective, businesses have realized that they will be required to pay only for what they use (Avram, 2014 p.530). Additionally, no massive capital expenses are required in deployment. This has attracted many businesses to adopt the technology especially those which have initially suffered high capital investments and running costs.

Again, for businesses which have suffered data loss in the past and experienced the desperate state which a normal business experiences under such circumstances, they have find all the reasons to adopt this technology as a game changing technology when it comes to disaster recovery processes and capabilities (Liu, Yang, Qu and Liu, 2016 p.1170). An excellent example of how cloud computing technology could manage safety of an organization date was clearly demonstrated in the year 2013 when Hurricane Sandy smashed New York through various ways used by the cloud service providers to move client’s data away as far as Los Angeles with an aim of ensuring full protection and normal operations. From such and other incidences, businesses have realized the advantages of this technology and taken a step of adopting it (Low, Chen and Wu, 2011 p.1010).

In conclusion, the research by Pei-Fang Hsu, Ray & Li-Hsieh can be termed as a clear and outstanding study because among its conclusive remarks we get to understand the reason behind the current advances being realized in the cloud computing technology adoption. In their research, they had outlined that the adoption of this technology is based on its perceived benefits and business concerns and that’s what has happened as observed in the current trends in the business environment where most of the businesses have resolved to adopt this technology after realizing its benefits.
