ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY 3 – Professional Development Project and Plan

BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management

1. This will be a project on meeting your own work priorities and effective planning for your professional development:


Select and describe a short-term goal (it must be at your work and part of your work responsibilities). Then set up a plan showing – step-by-step – how you will achieve that goal.

Your plan must include:

  • Description of your professional development goal
  • Stresses and influences in your life that may affect the plan
  • Contingency measures for deviations on your plan
  • Timelines (approximately 6 months to a year is acceptable)
  • Steps taken to achieve your professional (work) goal.

Notes: Your plan must have enough detail to demonstrate understanding of complexities and prioritisation (for example, “get money from bank” would be too simple).

2. Report on professional competence:

Write a report outlining your current skill levels and possible improvements. Include:

  • A summary of current job role and skills
  • A summary of skill gaps
  • A description of your organisation’s standards or performance criteria (i.e. KPIs)
  • A list of professional strengths and weaknesses
  • A summary of your future career path (must include at least 4 definite steps showing a clear progression to your career goal).

Any supporting documentation (awards, citations, certificates of merit, letters of approval, etc.) * ½ page suggested

IMPORTANT: This must be personal and your own work about your own thoughts and experiences to answer the questions. Any copying from the Internet to answer this question will result in your work needing to be re-done and you will not pass.

Personal Development

1. Set goals for yourself the next 10 years, 3 years, 1 years, and 1 month related to both your work, study and personal life.

2. What steps are you going to take to achieve those goals (especially short-term)?

3. Set a series of work goals for yourself for the next 12 months. Prioritise these using A, B, and C.

4. Complete this SWOT analysis based on your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the use of time. What opportunities can you see for improvement? What threats do you face?

5. Using the Internet (either use a laptop in pairs or the projector as a group), look at what different types of software are available for managing work priorities. Please take notes on the types of software and add screenshots of the software.

6. Using the To Do List provided – try creating a list for the activities you will undertake tomorrow.

  1. Have you had experience in a workplace where some facilities or perks have been offered which has helped you to do your job better or be happier in your workplace? If yes, please explain. If not, please write what facilities you would have liked to have had which would have helped you do your job better (be realistic and explain how they would help you?)
  2. How do you serve as a positive role model through personal work planning and organising?
  3. What are your accountabilities and responsibilities in your workplace? How do you prioritise them?
  4. How do you measure and maintain your personal performance in the workplace?
  5. Describe the types of technology you use to manage workplace priorities and commitments.
  6. How do you recognise the signs of personal stress? What strategies do you use to reduce the stress?
  7. How about team member’s stress? How do you recognise it and what do you do to reduce it?
  8. Carry out a skills audit on yourself. Use the format provided below. This will be used as a part of the formal assessment for this unit.
  9. Write as many areas as possible that could be used to describe competence in doing a job. Some suggested answers (you need to add more):
    • Problem solving abilities
    • Works well in a team
  10. You must design a feedback form for yourself on what they are like as a student. It must include at least 5 of the above and 2 extra (student can decide). It must include a suggestion of what can be done better and include weaknesses and strengths.
    Then give the feedback form to another student (or educator) to fill in about you. (It must be stressed that an incomplete feedback is a waste of time as you will not grow from the experience.)
    Write your reflection on the feedback you received: (and don’t forget to attach the form)
  11. Research 3 learning styles
    What are the 3 learning styles? Write characteristics of each. Which one do you think represents your learning style?
  12. Think of networking opportunities that exist in the workplace. They should include your own personal experiences.

    List the opportunities below and next to them write how that can help you to grow as a person or in your work.
  13. Identify the main strength of the business where you work or are familiar with. Identify some competitors that business has (and their strengths). Then think of ways to develop that strength to be even more competitive in the workplace.
