Case study scenario – PlanetG3

PlanetG3 is a small start-up company located in Sydney. They currently have eight employees and are planning to expand their office premises in the near future. PlanetG3 has consulted with your company XYZ Networking Services to setup their small office network.

As the network engineer at XYZ Networking Services, you are given the task of planning and designing the small office network for your client. You will be reporting to your project manager at XYZ Networking Services, Mark Myers (Email: markmyers@xyz.com , Phone: 0415987563)

Your client contact is Jason Brown (PlanetG3 Manager: Phone: 0415875988, Email: jbrown@gmail.com)

Continue reading this PlanetG3 case study scenario in document PlanetG3 Project scenario (PlanetG3_Project_Scenario.pdf). This document is in ICTSAS307_AE_SR1.zip.

Scenario –PlanetG3 network installation, configure, test and secure

Your proposed PlanetG3 network implementation plan has been approved by your client PlanetG3. You now need to complete for the network installation, configure, test and secure.

Part 1: Install network

Section 1. Prepare network environment

In this section you will be creating your network environment in Cisco Packet Tracer and establishing your physical environment in the PlanetG3 premises.

Step 1.1: Load the network configuration files

  1. Open PlanetG3 Network simulation file (PlanetG3_NetSim_PT.pka) with Cisco packet tracer to implement the network. This file is in ICTSAS307_AEzip.
  2. Save your file as PlanetG3_NetSim_PT_yourname.pka where yourname is your full name.

Step 1.2: Establish physical environment

To establish your physical environment, do the following:

  • Click on the Physical tab in the simulation file.
  • Navigate to the following physical location: Sydney NSW 2000.
  • Go inside the building: No 10, Beverly Street, PlanetG3 Office.

This now establishes your physical network in the simulated PlanetG3 office premises.

Make sure that you regularly save your file so that you do not lose any of your work.

Section 2. Install network

In this section you will be installing computer and other hardware, according to network design and industry standards, using your knowledge of relevant installation and configuration tools.

For this step you need to refer to your previously prepared PlanetG3 Network design.

Step 1.3: Install network

To install the network, do the following;

  1. Move the switch, server and backup device into the PlanetG3 server room closet.
  2. Connect devices in the network, using your selected cable types, according to your PlanetG3 Network Design.
  3. Click on the Logical tab in the simulation file
  4. Name and label all devices according to your PlanetG3 Network design.
  5. Connect the wireless router (WRT300N) it to the internet connection through the DSL modem provided by the ISP

Hint: You can create bend points on the cables by just clicking on the cable and choosing Create BendPoint.

Take a video recording (or screenshots) of the above steps and paste them in the following table.

Note:

  • If taking screenshots use a tool such as SnipIT to take a screenshot of only the part of the screen required.
  • If the activity is video-recorded, upload the video to a share service and paste the share link in the table below. Follow the Video recording instructions (pdf).

Part 2: Configure network

In this step you will be configuring computer and other hardware according to network design and industry standards, using your knowledge of relevant installation and configuration tools.

For this step you need to refer to your previously prepared PlanetG3 Network design.

Step 2.1: Configure network

Configure the network according to following settings provided in the Network configuration table. These are based on your PlanetG3 Network design.

Step 4.2 Troubleshoot security intrusion

In this step you will troubleshoot different types of security intrusion symptoms and issues in your network.

Scenario

It has been noted that there is a security risk associated with the FTP service on the server in the PlanetG3 network. Users are able to quickly work out how to log onto the FTP service and are then able to delete, modify, add and rename files.

This has caused great concern to PlanetG3 management as FTP is only supposed to be used to access and read archived files on the server. They believe this is a security risk as files could be lost or incorrectly modified.

They have asked that you investigate and update the FTP account settings on the server to eliminate or reduce the security risk.

Trouble shoot this problem on the PlanetG3 network and update the FTP service settings on the server to eliminate this risk.

Include screenshots and brief descriptions to provide evidence of your work in the table below.

Step 4.3 Security concepts and technology

In this step you will identify possible security concepts and technologies relevant to securing the network.

In the previous two steps (4.1 and 4.2), you used technology (router and server settings) to secure the network from possible network attacks.

Identify two specific technology setting changes that were made in any of the previous two steps. For each of these technology setting changes explain the relevant security concepts behind the change.

Use the following table for your answer. (Approx. 50 words)

Assessment checklist

The following checklist will be used by your assessor to mark your performance against the assessment criteria of your submitted packet tracer file. Use this checklist to understand what skills and/or knowledge you need to demonstrate in your submission. All the criteria described in the Assessment checklist must be met. The assessor may ask questions after the task has been submitted.
